She had no idea that just moments after she left, Zavier returned to the department.
Seeing Vivica’s empty workstation, Zavier asked the person next to her, “Where’s Vivica?”
Holly stood up. “She just left. She got a call that her son has a high fever and was admitted to the hospital, so she took emergency leave.”
Zavier’s brow furrowed at the news. What a coincidence. He had just come upstairs to find her, and she was already gone?
Holly, noticing his expression, asked, “Zavier, did you have work for her? I can help out.”
“No, it’s nothing. Carry on,” Zavier said, turning to leave. He pulled out his phone and made a call.
...
By the time Vivica arrived at the hospital, Chaim had already been checked in. Sheridan was speaking with Dr. Warren about the boy’s condition when she rushed over.
“We’ve administered medication to bring the fever down, and it should start to work soon. As for the cause, we’ll have to wait for the test results. Since he’s here, we might as well admit him. It’s about time for his second round of chemotherapy anyway, so he would have been back in a couple of days regardless.”
Dr. Warren, accustomed to all manner of complex and critical cases, was calm and methodical as he explained Chaim’s situation.
“Of course. We’ll follow your recommendations,” Vivica said, placing her complete trust in him.
The medical team Joseph had assembled was composed of highly experienced doctors, and as the family, their unconditional cooperation was crucial.
After their conversation with the doctor, Sheridan gestured to Vivica. “You should go to his room. Chaim isn’t feeling well and has been asking for his mom.”
“Okay, I’ll go right now. You two take your time.”
Sheridan, who had just entered the room, raised a hand. “Let’s not blame ourselves. No one wants a child to get sick. Chaim’s condition is delicate, and no matter how careful we are, things can happen. The important thing now is to focus on his treatment.”
His steadying words silenced both Vivica and Melanie. He was right. It was painful for everyone when Chaim fell ill, and assigning blame was useless. All that mattered was taking care of him.
Vivica held her son for a long while. Eventually, the medicine seemed to kick in. Chaim’s fever began to break, and he settled down, drifting off to sleep.
“Vivica, you can put him down now. You must be tired from holding him for so long,” Melanie said softly, her heart aching for her.
Vivica nodded and gently laid her son in the bed. Just as she was stretching her sore arms, her phone, which she’d set aside, started ringing.
She assumed it was Joseph, finished with his work and calling to check on Chaim. But when she picked it up, she saw Zavier’s name on the screen.
