It was only then that Evelyn learned that inmates had to spend money inside prison as well. Without it, they were looked down upon, or worse, bullied.
Unwilling to see her son suffer, she had wired all the compensation money to her husband and son, leaving her broke once again.
To make matters worse, the scandal had ruined her reputation in the neighborhood. Whenever she went to her community group activities, people would point and whisper, their words sharp and cruel.
She could no longer find any gullible old men to swindle, yet her daily expenses remained. In the end, her only option was to wait outside the hospital where Chaim had been treated, hoping to run into Vivica. After three days of waiting, her luck finally turned.
Seeing her reaction, and recalling the scene she had walked in on at home, Vivica quickly pieced it together.
“Don’t tell me,” she ventured, “you’ve been seducing old men for their money and got beaten up by their families, didn’t you?”
Evelyn’s face fell, her eyes darting away evasively.
Vivica knew she had guessed right. She stared at Evelyn, her face etched with undisguised contempt. Any lingering sympathy she might have felt for her vanished in an instant.
“You know, even if you got a job washing dishes or waiting tables, you could make enough to support yourself. Why resort to this?”
Evelyn shot back defensively, “Could you stand washing dishes in this cold? Besides, if it weren’t for your heartless betrayal, getting your father and brother thrown in jail, I’d be a restaurant owner right now. Do you think I’d be in this mess?”
Evelyn looked at his sharp, piercing gaze and felt a shiver run down her spine. She fell silent.
Just then, a waiter knocked and entered with their food.
Evelyn hadn’t had a decent meal in days. Her eyes lit up at the sight of the lavish spread. Swallowing hard, she picked up her knife and fork and began to eat.
Across the table, Vivica and Joseph watched her, neither of them touching their food.
Evelyn devoured the food like a starving animal. She was already full before all the dishes had even arrived. Sitting back, she took a sip of water, let out a loud burp, and looked at them. “Aren’t you eating?”
