After they left the private room, Joseph went to the front desk to pay the bill.
"We need to find somewhere to grab some takeout. Sheridan and Melanie are probably starving," Vivica said anxiously, checking the time on her phone. It was already seven in the evening.
"Relax," Joseph reassured her. "I messaged Roderic a while ago and had him order food to be delivered to the hospital. They've already eaten."
"Really?" Vivica asked, surprised. "When did you do that? I didn't even notice."
Joseph gave a faint smile. "I sent it right after we sat down in the room. You were too busy talking to Evelyn to notice."
Vivica nodded, her expression distant and lost in thought.
"How are you doing?" Joseph asked with concern. "If you want to cry, just let it out. I won't judge you."
Vivica understood his kindness but shot him a sideways glance. "What's the point of crying? It all happened over twenty years ago. Besides, I already expected to hear what Evelyn said."
"I see. You're even stronger than I thought."
As they stepped out of the restaurant, they found Roderic waiting with the car. They got in, and Roderic drove them to another restaurant for dinner.
Thinking about how he had silently arranged everything for her, Vivica instinctively leaned her head against his shoulder. "I'm sorry. If it weren't for me, you never would have had to sit down for a meal with someone like Evelyn. I'm sure it ruined your appetite."
Joseph chuckled softly, looking down at the woman resting on his shoulder. It was clear she was still hurting; otherwise, she wouldn't be seeking comfort from him so openly. He lifted his arm and gently pulled her into his embrace.
"I admit, I can be a bit of a snob," he said in a low, slow voice. "My work has brought me into contact with people from all walks of life, but it's rare to encounter individuals like your adoptive parents, who seem to embody every human flaw."
He gave a wry smile. "If it weren't for you, I certainly wouldn't have had the... opportunity to share a table with people of that caliber."
"I'm sorry you had to endure that," Vivica sighed again.
That night, Vivica slept in the bed with Chaim. Worried his fever might spike again, she woke up periodically to check his forehead.
Around four in the morning, Joseph woke up and got off the cot. "Vivica..."
She was already awake, her hand on her son's forehead. Hearing his voice, she turned. "What is it?"
"I'll watch him. You go get some proper sleep," Joseph whispered.
"No, it's okay, I can do it. You have a busy day at work tomorrow," she quickly refused. As his mother, it was her duty to be there for him. Joseph was just his uncle; the fact that he was helping at all was more than enough. She couldn't let him take on the primary responsibility.
Seeing her refusal, Joseph didn't argue. He simply leaned over, slid his arms under her, and lifted her up.
"Hey, what are you—" Vivica gasped, quickly pushing the blanket aside and wrapping her arms around his neck.
