“Who paid you to frame our Mr. Baird? Confess now. This is your last chance!”
“No… I didn’t! It was Mr. Baird… He was drunk and out of his mind, and he tried to rape me!”
While the woman was still trying to argue her case, the other lawyers returned, dragging the two men who had attempted to flee. Before the police could even begin their questioning, Roderic pointed at them. “Officer, those two men are her accomplices! They drugged Mr. Baird first in an attempt to frame him!”
“You’re lying! We just saw Mr. Baird was drunk and were trying to help him!”
“Yeah, we were just doing a good deed!” the two men vehemently denied.
“A good deed? Then why were you running?” Roderic shot back, seeing through their blatant lies. He turned to a colleague near the front. “Get down to security and secure the surveillance footage now!”
While the others didn't know the full story, Roderic was almost certain. This had to be the work of the same people who had tried to kill Vivica. After the failed car accident, they had now turned their sights on Mr. Baird, likely planning to eliminate him before going after Vivica again. Anyone willing to go this far would’ve planned it carefully, so locking down the evidence came first.
Seeing that Joseph was clearly disoriented and the woman was injured and losing blood, the police officer decided both needed urgent medical care. After taking down everyone’s contact information, he instructed them to go to the hospital.
Roderic dispatched one of the lawyers to follow the woman. For his part, he asked one of the officers to drive him and Joseph to the hospital.
He wanted the police escort for two reasons: he feared another incident on the way, and having an officer present would serve as both a witness and a deterrent. If their attackers were brazen enough to assault a police officer, the incident would escalate to a completely different level.
Joseph’s condition was deteriorating rapidly. He was shivering uncontrollably, his body wracked with convulsions as he drifted in and out of consciousness.
Roderic was terrified, calling his name over and over. Joseph briefly roused, though it was less of a true awakening and more like the delirious mumblings of a drunkard.
“Don’t tell her… Don’t…”
The fragmented sentence made perfect sense to Roderic. “I know, Mr. Baird, I won’t tell your wife,” he promised. “How are you feeling? Hang in there, we’re almost at the hospital! Officer, can you please go any faster?”
After uttering those few words, Joseph lapsed back into a state of unconscious convulsions. The officer sped up, but Roderic’s heart was still racing. He couldn’t tell Vivica, and he certainly couldn’t call Sheridan and Melanie this late at night.
After a moment’s thought, Roderic called Harvey Murphy. Harvey wasn’t working late and was already getting ready for bed. The news had him practically leaping out of it.
“Good. Secure that evidence,” Roderic instructed.
Another call came in from the colleague liaising with the police. Roderic answered immediately and was informed that the police had identified the two men. They were local thugs in their twenties with prior convictions.
Inside the emergency room, Harvey was shocked by Joseph's battered appearance. “Joseph? Joseph?” he called out softly. When there was no response, he turned to the doctor with concern.
The doctor explained, “The patient was given a large dose of a powerful sedative, combined with…”
“Wait,” Harvey interrupted, frowning. “A sedative and what?”
“A powerful sedative mixed with a strong aphrodisiac,” the doctor clarified. “The combination is designed to render a person unable to resist while simultaneously inducing intense physiological arousal.”
“Son of a bitch!” Harvey swore, slamming his fists together. “What kind of monster does something like this!”
