Full of doubt, Vivica dialed her husband’s number.
Across town in another hospital, Joseph was waking up again. A nurse was drawing his blood for another round of tests when his phone began to ring.
Roderic brought it over with a frown. “Boss, it’s your wife. She’s probably calling to see if you’ve sobered up.”
Joseph took the phone with his free hand. “What did you tell her last night?”
“I just said you got drunk and went back to your own place, and that I was staying to look after you. I told her not to worry,” Roderic recounted precisely, afraid of any inconsistencies.
“Good.” Joseph nodded. With their story straight, he answered the call.
“Hello?”
Vivica had thought he was still passed out from the alcohol. “Oh, you’re awake! I was about to say I might have to come home to drag you out of bed,” she teased.
He deserved it for getting drunk.
“That won’t be necessary. I didn’t have that much…” Joseph chuckled softly, but his words were cut short as the nurse withdrew the needle. He couldn't press down on the bandage himself, so he shot a look at Roderic, who immediately stepped forward to apply pressure.
But Roderic, being clumsy, pressed down too hard, causing Joseph to wince in pain.
Vivica’s sharp ears caught the sound. “What’s wrong? Why did you hiss?”
Joseph’s lie was ready. “Hangover headache. It feels like a vice grip on my head.”
“So, when can you come get us?” Vivica asked, her focus clear.
“I…” Joseph pulled the phone away to check the time. It was only just past eight in the morning. Even if he could get discharged, it would take at least a couple of hours. He hesitated, then found an excuse. “I have to go back to the firm for something urgent. I probably won’t be free until noon. Can you wait for me to pick you up then?”
“Not until noon?” Vivica sounded disappointed.
Melanie, overhearing her daughter-in-law, immediately interjected. “Tell him not to worry about it. We’ll make our own arrangements.”
The family estate had drivers and a butler. It would be simple to have them both brought straight there. A house full of family for the holidays—perfect. Whether her son made it back in time or not, Melanie didn’t think much of it.
Vivica smiled at the suggestion. “Mom says you don’t have to worry about us. We’ll make our own way.”
