Glad for the rare opportunity to learn about Mr. Baird’s past, Vivica chatted with his cousin for a long time. Nothing helps women bond faster than sharing a little gossip.
Before heading to the family estate, Joseph first stopped at his own apartment to shower and change, making sure there was no outward sign that anything was amiss.
When Vivica finally saw him, her eyes lit up, and a smile she couldn’t suppress spread across her face.
Joseph walked into the sunroom, his curiosity piqued. “What are you smiling about?”
His cousin stood up. “Joseph, you’re back. I was just telling Vivica about your past.”
Joseph’s gaze shifted to his wife, and he hit the nail on the head. “Were you trying to find out how many girlfriends I’ve had? Don’t worry, my private life has always been very respectable.”
“I wasn’t asking about that at all,” Vivica countered with a laugh, deciding to flatter him a bit. “I just wanted to learn more about your past, and it turns out, just as I expected, you were brilliant and outstanding.”
Joseph looked down, seeming almost bashful. When he looked up again, he glanced at his cousin, who immediately took the hint. “Well, I should probably go check on the children. I’ll leave you two to talk.”
After his cousin left, Joseph sat down where she had been.
“How are you feeling today? Any better? Is your head still spinning?” he asked, his questions tumbling out in a rush of concern.
Vivica desperately wanted to move closer to him, but she restrained herself. This was the family estate, after all, and she had to be mindful of appearances. But as if he could read her mind, Joseph grabbed her hand and pulled her directly into his lap.
“This… this isn’t very appropriate, is it?” Vivica murmured, though her face bloomed into a radiant smile.
“Don’t worry, no one else is coming,” Joseph replied, his arms tightening unconsciously, holding her securely in his embrace.
But it wasn't enough.
He leaned forward, burying his handsome face in the soft curve of her neck. Vivica felt him take a deep, shuddering breath.
Just as she was debating whether to drop a hint, her phone rang. Who would be calling so late?
She rolled over, grabbed her phone, and saw Quintina Christie’s name on the screen. The moment she answered, Joseph’s phone began to ring as well.
“Hello? Quintina, you’re still up?”
“I was just about to go to sleep, but I was scrolling on my phone and saw the news about your Mr. Baird!”
Before Vivica could ask what news, Joseph suddenly sat bolt upright in bed.
“The woman wasn’t under police guard? Where are the men I sent? Were they just for show?”
Joseph’s tone was grim, and a jolt of alarm went through Vivica. She turned to look at him, a terrible premonition taking root in her mind. The news Quintina was talking about had to be the same thing Joseph was dealing with on his call.
