Vivica froze. Even at his young age, her son was so perceptive and sensitive. It wasn't her fault, but his premature maturity filled her with a sense of guilt and sorrow.
After lunch, Vivica checked the time. She needed to head back to the office, but Fletcher and Dylan hadn't arrived yet, and she was hesitant to leave.
Just as she was wondering if they would even show up, she heard voices from the hallway. It was her sister-in-law, Loretta.
"Wow, Vivica must be doing well for herself, getting the kid a private room."
At the sound of that voice, Vivica braced herself like a soldier preparing for battle.
The door swung open, and Fletcher entered first, followed by his father, Dylan, and his sister, Loretta.
Dylan spotted his grandson on the bed and rushed over. "Oh, my precious boy, why didn't you tell Grandpa you were so sick? I only just found out today."
Loretta's eyes widened when she saw her nephew's shaved head. "Is it really that serious?"
Vivica ignored her. Standing by the bed, she caught the strong smell of stale smoke clinging to Dylan.
"Dylan," she said, trying to be diplomatic, "you just had a cigarette. It's better if you don't get too close to Chaim. His immune system is weak, and secondhand smoke isn't good for him."
Dylan, who was just about to pick up his grandson, scowled. "What's that supposed to mean? Not only are you trying to take custody of my grandson, but now you won't even let me hold him?"
Vivica felt her face turn green from the smell of his breath. She clutched her son and moved to the other side of the bed.
She had no intention of arguing with a stubborn, defensive old man. Instead, she fixed her gaze on Fletcher. "You wanted to see the child, and now you have. There's nothing to discuss about the divorce. I'll see you at the registry office tomorrow."
Her meaning was clear: get out.
Before Fletcher could respond, Loretta jumped in. "Vivica, you've gone too far! We're Chaim's family. You can't just keep us away from him!"
Vivica wasn't one to back down. She hit Loretta where it hurt. "Have you sorted things out with your cheating boyfriend yet? You have enough problems of your own without meddling in mine."
