Chaim rarely stayed in hotels. The moment they stepped into the room, he was buzzing with excitement, exploring every corner.
"Mommy, I love it here! It's so beautiful, like a palace from a fairy tale!"
Seeing her son's beaming face, Vivica felt the tension in her chest unravel. "At least Chaim is happy, no matter what happens with the DNA test on this trip."
"Yeah, let's just treat it as a vacation. No pressure," Joseph said, setting down the suitcases and digging out some lighter clothes for Chaim. "I'll get Chaim changed. You go ahead and freshen up."
"Okay."
This was the first time in her memory that she was going to meet her biological relatives. Vivica kept her makeup simple and elegant, deciding to wear her favorite emerald earrings.
Joseph knocked on the bathroom door. "Are you ready? Chaim and I are all set, and I've got the host gifts ready to go."
"Almost done," Vivica called back, turning her head as she tried to clasp the earring.
Joseph walked in and gently took it from her. "Here, let me."
With careful, steady fingers, he guided the emerald post through Vivica's earlobe.
Once it was secured, Vivica turned to him with a slightly shy smile. "Well? How do I look?"
Joseph's gaze darkened with warmth. "Stunning."
She couldn't help but tease him. "How stunning?"
Joseph cleared his throat, a wicked smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. "So stunning... I kind of want to skip dinner altogether."
Vivica was speechless. Her smile vanished in a flash as she grabbed his arm and dragged him toward the door. "Let's go. They've been waiting long enough."
Raymond was waiting at the entrance of the restaurant and hurried over the moment he saw them. Joseph was carrying several beautifully wrapped boxes—clearly gifts for the occasion.
Vivica's smile stiffened slightly; she was so overwhelmed she forgot to even say hello.
Thankfully, Raymond stepped in, gently easing his mother's hands away. "Mom, take it easy. Give Vivica a second to breathe."
"Oh! Oh, right, of course! I'm just so excited!" Cheryl laughed through her tears. She then looked down at Chaim, her voice softening into a gentle coo. "Well, hello there, handsome. You must be Chaim! I'm your Great-Aunt Cheryl. I've been dying to meet you!"
Great-Aunt... The title felt so foreign to Vivica. She had never imagined she'd have an aunt, let alone that Chaim would have a great-aunt.
But since the DNA test hadn't officially confirmed anything yet, Vivica sidestepped the heavy familial titles and simply nudged her son. "Chaim, say hello."
"Happy New Year! I hope you have a wonderful year full of happiness and good health!"
The little boy offered a sweet smile and a polite wave, instantly melting Cheryl's heart and leaving her beaming.
