Vivica heard his tone and immediately had an inkling. Her mind buzzed, a sudden rush of heat sweeping over her from head to toe.
"What is it?" she feigned calm, suppressing her chaotic heartbeat.
"Vivica, the DNA test results are in. You are Hillary's biological daughter. You two are mother and daughter!"
Raymond's voice was pitched high, breathless with excitement. "Vivica, we are family. We finally found you!"
Vivica listened quietly without saying a word, but the ringing in her ears intensified, throwing her entire mind into a vacuum where the words just endlessly echoed. Raymond was still talking, but she couldn't hear him clearly.
It wasn't until Chaim, sitting next to her, noticed her holding the phone in silence and turned to call out, "Mom," twice, that she suddenly jolted back to reality.
At the same time, Joseph glanced in the rearview mirror, his eyes serious and concerned, and gently reminded her, "We're at the hospital."
Vivica swallowed hard, her thoughts slowly kicking back into gear, and finally spoke into the phone. "I understand. We'll talk when we see each other."
Raymond was thrilled and quickly replied, "Okay, okay, we'll wait for you guys. I'll be right by the elevators."
Hanging up the phone, Joseph had already found a parking spot. He got out of the car, but instead of rushing to unbuckle Chaim, he opened Vivica's door first, his face full of worry.
"What did they say? Is it biological?" he leaned in and asked with deep concern.
Vivica turned to look at him, her eyes clouded with a complex mix of confusion and daze. She gave a slow nod. "Yeah, they are my birth parents."
Chaim stared at his parents, his big, innocent eyes full of confusion, but he was sensible enough to stay perfectly quiet.
"Use your words. Keep your hands to yourself," Joseph warned, his tone strict and his demeanor ice-cold.
Raymond didn't get angry. Still wearing a massive smile, he explained to Joseph, "I was just too excited and lost my composure for a second, my apologies. Let's hurry over. Hillary is waiting."
Vivica furrowed her brow at his words. Thinking Raymond had tricked her into coming to the hospital, she immediately asked, "She was resuscitated?"
"She's still on oxygen. When we told her the good news, she cried tears of joy. The doctor said she shouldn't experience any extreme emotional highs or lows, but how could she stay calm after finding her long-lost daughter? You should go see her and offer some comfort."
Without waiting to finish his sentence, Raymond turned and led the way. Vivica and Joseph exchanged a look before stepping forward to follow him.
Hillary was in the intensive care unit, surrounded by a swarm of doctors and nurses, with Cheryl keeping watch by her side.
