Seeing Vivica’s lack of reaction and the suspicion in her eyes, Raymond quickly explained, “Vivica, don’t worry, this is a completely genuine offer. There are no tricks or traps. If you don't believe me, you can have Mr. Baird review the agreement and have it thoroughly investigated.” With that, he handed the document to Joseph. As a lawyer, no one understood these things better than him.
Joseph’s expression was stern. He bent down to put Chaim on the floor, then took the agreement.
Vivica snapped out of her daze, her brow furrowed. “It’s not that I’m suspicious,” she clarified. “I just… I don’t plan on living in Sydville City.” So, even if the shares were transferred to her, she couldn’t work at the headquarters.
Raymond nodded in understanding. “That’s true, your life is in Riverdale City. But you can still accept this. If you can reclaim the shares that originally belonged to your mother from your uncles, you’ll be the company’s largest shareholder, with absolute control.”
Vivica was about to say she wasn’t interested, but then Raymond changed his tune. “When that happens, you could consider moving the company headquarters to Riverdale. That way, you and Mr. Baird wouldn’t have to live in separate cities. A happy ending for everyone.”
Vivica was astonished. Did it have to be this complicated? All she had wanted was a stable job to find some purpose and have fulfilling days. A simple, content life was her idea of perfection. But now, they were placing such immense expectations on her.
“That… that all seems very far off,” Vivica said with a small laugh.
Hayes and Raymond were somewhat disappointed, but they understood her reasoning and reluctantly agreed. “But please, accept the gold,” Hayes said. “I’m the boy’s grandfather. I have to give him a gift for our first meeting.” He gestured for Raymond to hand the other box to Vivica. “I know it’s a bit tacky, and a child would find it useless compared to toys or treats. But anything else would be inconvenient for you to take back home. Gold is the most practical. You can hold onto it for him.”
Vivica looked at the heavy gold and shook her head. “This isn’t convenient to carry either; it’s too heavy. I’ll accept the sentiment on my son’s behalf.”
Raymond insisted, pushing the box toward her. “It’s not that heavy. Please, take it. If you really won’t, then Hayes will just have to give Chaim the cash equivalent.”
