He called Harvey on the way.

Harvey, who had also just gotten home from a long day at work, had finished his shower and was about to fall into bed. He answered the phone with a groggy yawn. “Joseph? What’s so important at this hour?”

Joseph’s voice was tight. “Are you home?”

“It’s the middle of the night. Where else would I be?”

“Good. Wait for me.”

He hung up without another word.

Harvey, who had been on the verge of sleep, was now wide awake.

“What’s gotten into him now?” he muttered to himself, scrolling through his phone to pass the time.

When the doorbell rang, he was genuinely surprised. “That was fast. Did he fly here?”

Their homes weren’t exactly next door to each other. Even with no traffic, the drive should have taken at least half an hour. It had barely been fifteen minutes.

Shaking his head, Harvey slipped on a robe and went to the door. A glance through the peephole revealed his friend standing on the porch, his face a thunderous mask. Harvey braced himself.

“What’s the emergency that couldn’t wait until…” he grumbled as he opened the door.

He never finished his sentence. Joseph shoved the door open, sending him stumbling backward.

“Joseph, what the— Hey! What are you doing?!”

Seeing the look on Harvey’s face and hearing his question, Joseph had his answer. Without hesitation, he threw another punch.

This time, Harvey nearly crumpled to the floor, blood trickling from the corner of his lip.

“Damn it… you hit hard,” he groaned, straightening up and dabbing at the blood with his hand.

Joseph ignored him and stalked into the living room. Eager for the full story, Harvey quickly shut the door and followed, stopping at the fridge to grab an ice pack for his jaw before joining his friend.

“What’s going on? You have to tell me everything,” Harvey prompted.

Joseph remained silent, just shot him a withering glare and tossed a file at him. He’d had the lab director meet him halfway to deliver the hard copy of the report.
