The IVF Secret That Shook a Dynasty novel Chapter 60

She normally wouldn't resort to threats, but these were desperate times. Legally, her son had no connection to the Baird family. If Joseph wanted a favor from her, it was only fair that she ask for one in return.

Joseph turned with her and, without a moment's hesitation, said, “I agree. As of this moment, I am your divorce attorney.”

Vivica stopped in her tracks, stunned and overjoyed. She turned back to him. “You really agree?”

“Yes. And thank you for being willing to let the child spend time with us.”

His gratitude was genuine. After all, the child was his own flesh and blood. This miracle, this unexpected heir to the Baird family, could be the key to pulling his mother from the depths of her grief. He was immensely grateful.

Vivica was still dazed. It felt as though happiness had just fallen from the sky. Not only did her son now have a wealthy, powerful family to dote on him, but her biggest worry—the divorce—was now all but won.

“No, no, Mr. Baird, I should be thanking you,” she said quickly, once she’d found her voice.

Joseph gave a faint smile and a slight nod. “Let’s go. To the registry office.”

Vivica was surprised again. “You’re coming with me?”

“Am I not your lawyer?” he countered.

A thrill of excitement and relief shot through Vivica.

“Even if agreeing to the settlement is just a tactic, we need to be prepared for any tricks they might pull. There’s no limit to how low some people will sink,” Joseph explained, worried she might be at a disadvantage going alone.

Vivica was so happy she could barely think straight. She hurried to keep up with his long strides.

Just as they stepped into the elevator, her phone rang.

“It’s them,” she said, glancing at the screen.

“Answer it,” Joseph said, his simple words radiating an aura of complete control.

Vivica immediately felt a surge of confidence. “Hello?”

The call ended just as the elevator reached the ground floor.

Joseph checked his watch. “Take my car. I know the way to the registry office.”

Vivica looked up at him, momentarily mesmerized by his calm, confident demeanor. Her own anger began to subside.

Sliding into the plush leather seat of Joseph’s Bentley, a car worth millions, Vivica felt her breath catch in her throat. A Bentley had always been Fletcher’s dream car, the one he’d fantasized about buying after his company went public, his ultimate symbol of arriving in high society. She wondered if he’d ever get his chance now.

The silence in the car felt a little awkward. Vivica scrambled for something to say.

“By the way, is your mother feeling any better? When they came to see me, I was so upset with my own parents that I wasn’t very polite. I think your mother might have felt unwell…” Vivica felt a pang of guilt as she recalled the scene.

“And they brought so many nutritional supplements for Chaim later. I wanted to return them, but the nurse said they had transferred hospitals.”

Joseph kept his eyes on the road, his profile calm. “They didn't transfer. They’re in a family suite in the north wing. And no, my mother’s condition hasn’t improved much.”
