Vivica looked up. "What do you mean by that? Am I not allowed to care about the state of the world?"
"You can, of course you can!" Joseph laughed, putting an arm around her shoulder and giving it a gentle pat.
After a quiet moment between them, Joseph looked down at her. After some thought, he finally asked, "Are you still mad? You've been giving me the cold shoulder these past few days, and it's been driving me crazy. No matter what I did or where I went, it felt like I was carrying the weight of the world."
Vivica's heart skipped a beat.
She knew it. After that dramatic "hero rescuing the damsel" act yesterday evening, their little cold war was officially over.
Having had a few days to process everything, she had come to terms with it. She decided to just face it head-on.
Vivica sat up slightly in his arms, her expression a bit aloof. "I stopped being mad a while ago. I'm just intimidated by you."
Joseph sat up a bit too, looking completely baffled. "Intimidated by me? What do you mean?"
"You're a brilliant lawyer, Mr. Baird. I'm clearly no match for you," Vivica said with a hint of sarcasm.
Hearing this, Joseph didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "You're definitely still mad."
"I'm not. I'm just stating facts."
"Okay, I was wrong. I really shouldn't have kept it from you. Even if I hid it at first, I should have come clean right after we got married. It's my fault."
Joseph felt that if she was willing to discuss it directly, it meant they were turning a page. Since that was the case, he was ready to offer a sincere apology and clear the air.
"Apology accepted." Vivica still maintained a slightly proud look. She glanced at him and asked, "What else are you hiding from me?"
Vivica looked at him expectantly. "How is Chaim your biological son? When did you ever donate sperm?"
Facing the topic head-on again, Joseph's expression darkened, clearly a bit displeased. "This is all Harvey's fault."
"Dr. Murphy?" Vivica was surprised.
"Yeah. Back when he was a medical intern, he had a sudden whim and dragged me and two other buddies to a clinic. At first, we got brainwashed by his smooth talking and filled out the paperwork without thinking much of it. Later, when I realized it was a terrible idea, I demanded he destroy my sample. He promised he would, but he secretly kept it, thinking I'd never find out."
"After all... the protocol for these things is strictly double-blind. In theory, a donor is never supposed to know. But the world is a crazy place, and somehow, I managed to hit that impossible probability."
At this point, Joseph glanced at his wife, recalling their very first encounter at the hospital.
"When my mom was hospitalized out of pure grief, her doctor mentioned seeing a little boy who looked exactly like Lennon. Initially, we all assumed Lennon must have had a secret girlfriend who had his child without our knowledge."
