Joseph carried the boy with ease, his steps steady and his tone calm. “Then just let him spend more time with my parents.”
“Of course. As long as Chaim is willing, I have no objection.”
Vivica was completely won over. As long as it didn’t go against her son’s wishes, she was happy to agree.
They soon arrived at the north wing and stopped at the luxurious private room at the end of the hall.
“My mother is in this room,” Joseph said. “You can bring Chaim over yourself whenever you have time in the future.”
Vivica nodded. “Okay.”
The thought of formally meeting the child’s biological grandparents made her feel a mix of emotions.
Joseph, still holding Chaim, glanced down at her. “Don’t worry, my parents are very easygoing. There’s no need to be nervous.”
She forced a smile. “Okay, I’m ready.”
Joseph pushed the door open and walked in. Vivica followed, her hands clasped, staying half a step behind him.
Inside, Melanie had just finished her lunch and was resting. Sheridan was brewing coffee nearby, and the elderly couple was chatting idly. They both turned when their son entered, but before they could speak, their gazes locked on the little boy in his arms.
In an instant, Melanie’s expression transformed, her eyes lighting up with a brilliant spark. “Joseph, this…” She was so excited she tried to sit up, propping herself up on her hands. A nearby nurse rushed to help her.
Melanie had met Vivica before, so she recognized her. A joyful, benevolent smile spread across her face as she glanced at Vivica.
Sheridan was equally stunned. He shot to his feet so quickly that he knocked over his coffee cup. The butler jumped in alarm. “Sir, be careful! Did you burn yourself?”
But the old man couldn't care less about being burned. He hurried toward his son. “Joseph, this boy…”
Joseph glanced at Vivica before explaining to his parents, “I’ve spoken with Ms. Lynn. She has agreed to let the boy come and spend some time with you.”
“Wonderful, just wonderful!” Melanie murmured, her eyes fixed on Vivica with incredible warmth. “Thank you, Ms. Lynn. My husband and I were so rude the other day. It was truly inappropriate of us.”
Seeing how approachable and kind the two elders were, Vivica was filled with regret. “I’m the one who should be sorry. My attitude was terrible that day. You helped me, and I was so suspicious…” she apologized, her face flushing with heat.
Seeing the two sides being so formal, Joseph cut in. “Let’s not dwell on the past. From now on, you can see the child whenever you want, provided he’s willing to spend time with you.”
At this, Sheridan and Melanie exchanged a look, both so overjoyed they didn’t know what to do. “Ms. Lynn, thank you so much! Joseph, quickly, have Ms. Lynn sit down. Ask her what she’d like to drink.” Joy seemed to be the best medicine. Melanie’s ailments appeared to vanish in an instant, and even her voice was stronger.
“Mrs. Baird, my name is Vivica. Please, just call me Vivica. There’s no need to be so formal,” Vivica replied politely, then prompted her son. “Sweetie, say hello to Grandpa and Grandma.”
Chaim, clever as he was, instantly understood he was a welcome guest.
“You just sprung this on us without any warning,” Melanie complained. “We didn’t have anything prepared for the boy, not even a gift for Ms. Lynn.”
“There will be plenty of opportunities in the future,” Joseph replied.
Vivica soon returned from her call.
“In a hurry to get to work?” Joseph asked.
“No, a colleague just had a question. It’s sorted out now. I also let my supervisor know I’ll be half an hour late,” she explained with a smile.
The cheerful atmosphere in the room was infectious, and her own eyes crinkled with a smile. She hadn’t experienced such a warm and harmonious feeling in a long time and was reluctant to leave.
Looking at Chaim up close, Melanie couldn’t get enough of him. She leaned over and whispered to her husband, “He looks just like Lennon. The more I look, the more I see it.”
Sheridan shook his head. “I think some of his expressions are more like Joseph’s.”
Those words made Joseph’s heart clench, his gaze darkening for a moment.
Vivica overheard and asked him in a low voice, “Aren’t you going to tell them who Chaim is?”
