Chapter 223
Chapter 223
ISIDORA
When I left my room the next morning, Blaze was standing in the hallway.
He looked like he hadn’t slept at all.
I hadn’t slept well either.

I’d spent most of the night wondering whether I should ask him to come inside and what I was going to do with my future.
“Stay here and watch Elessia. Don’t let anyone into the room, and make sure that woman doesn’t hurt her again,” I said quietly so Elessia wouldn’t hear me.
I still didn’t know how the matriarch would find out if I betrayed her, but I assumed it had something to do with whatever she had put inside Elessia.
“I’ll protect her…” His voice was rough as I lifted my head to face him.
“You’d better. You can reject me all you want, but if anything happens to her… I’ll never forgive you, Blaze. I’m trusting you.”
As I said it, I swear a flicker of doubt appeared inside my chest for the first time.
I’d spent the whole night thinking about how Blaze had found Marion.
How he had been in the perfect place at the perfect time for me to see them together.
“She’ll be safe,” he assured me.
And I decided to trust him again, like I always did.
Maybe he didn’t love me. Maybe the bond between us meant nothing to him.
But he had saved my life many times.
“Okay, then I…” The words caught in my throat when he reached out and pulled something from my hair.
His fingers brushed the side of my neck, sending a shiver through me before I could stop it.
His masculine scent hit me, and that invisible thread between our souls pulled at mine again… Only mine.
I stepped back as if he had shocked me.
“You had… this in your hair,” he said quietly, showing me a few pieces of lint from the towel.
“I don’t want you touching me anymore. I don’t think I need any more of your energy. Like I told you last night, once I deal with this, I’ll give you your freedom… and the rejection.”

Chapter 223
I turned away without looking at him again and walked down the hallway.
I could feel his eyes on my back, but I was tired of his silence and his riddles.
I needed words. I needed the truth.
When I entered the huge dining hall filled with long tables, I searched for the girls.
I found Karla sitting in one corner, and she waved me over.
I started walking toward her, but I could feel people watching me.
A few warriors even greeted me with respectful nods as I passed.
I knew I had made a strong impression the day before.
And now Varka’s aura poured from my body with enough force to show everyone her level.
“How’s Mika?” I asked as I sat beside Karla.
We started talking about Mikaela’s condition.

“She’s better, but I think I’m the one you’ll have to take care of today…” she said with a crooked smile.
“You trained hard. Don’t give up before the fight even starts,” I told her, thanking the servant who placed our breakfast in front of us.
I began choosing what I wanted to eat.
“I’m fighting a New Moon Estingian who’s been at this rank longer than we have. They say she’s close to becoming a Full Moon, so I’m not getting my hopes up…”
She chewed for a moment before continuing.
“Besides, I already told you I’m not going either. I want to stay with Mika. We still want to follow you to the palace someday, but we need more training first…”
I heard her, but my attention had already moved to the far end of the dining hall.
That snake of a matriarch was sitting at the main table beside my mentor, but the old woman seated in the middle was the one who made my heart jump.
It was her.
The little old woman who had mistaken me for the owner of the journal.
I didn’t get far.
While I was asking where her room was, one of her slaves came to tell me she had sent for me.
When I entered the dungeon she had turned into a bedroom, I wasn’t even surprised that it looked like a small garden.
When had she found the time to do all of this? Only the Goddess knew.
“Are you going to stand there like a fool? Have you never seen gardenias before?”

“I’m sorry, ma’am…” I walked farther into the room.

Vines hung from the ceiling, and the air was so thick with the strong smell of medicine that Varka grew uneasy.
“Sit down. We’ll have some tea.”
“Wait. I need to speak to you about something…”
“Drink your tea first. There’s no rush,” she interrupted, as calm as always.
I wanted to shout that there was a fucking rush.
But I kept my mouth shut and picked up the steaming cup in front of me.
My eyes kept moving around the room.
Could the matriarch really know if I told Legna anything right now? How?
Unless she had put something inside me too.
