“That smell is strange…” I heard Varka say, but her voice sounded far away.
I watched my mentor’s lips moving.
For a moment, I didn’t even know what we were talking about.
I only kept drinking my tea like a puppet with no control over her own body.
“Isidora… what did you want to tell me? Isidora?”
“What?” I blinked as if I had just come up from deep water. “I’m sorry. What did you say?”
“What did you want to tell me?”
“Oh… right. Yes.” I set the empty cup down and fought to focus.
I was running out of time.
“There’s something you need to see with your own eyes.” I said it before I could change my mind.
I stood suddenly, walked around the small table, and leaned over her while pulling the pendant from beneath my clothes.
The moment she saw the red crystal drop, Legna recognized it.
“What are you doing with something like that?”
“I’ll show you.”
I wrapped my arms around her without hesitation and crushed the crystal drop between my fingers.
I was acting on pure instinct. Thank the Goddess, it worked.
In an instant, we appeared in the middle of a garden filled with ruined statues and cold mist.
There, surrounded by all that fog, sat the Supreme Elder, drugged with Dream Powder.
She had given me the pendant so I could return to her. And it had brought me straight back.
“Your Eminence!”
Legna immediately saw that something was wrong.
The old woman was slumped in a chair with her eyes rolled back, trembling and mumbling nonsense about the Goddess.

I quickly covered my nose and mouth so I wouldn’t start hallucinating too.

“Matriarch Helen drugged her. She’s the one keeping her like this. She’s slowly poisoning her so she can steal her position!”
“How do you know all of this, Isidora? And how did you get the true matriarch’s life energy?!”
Legna looked at me with suspicion as she moved closer to the old woman, but she couldn’t wake her from the trance.
“Because I was with her once. She mistook me for Valezka because of the sword…”
Legna tensed when I said that name.
“And because Helen is blackmailing me. She ordered me to kill you.”
Hot blood splashed across my face.
My panicked gaze dropped to the long dagger charged with Estingian power.
It had gone through Legna’s chest from behind.

“No… no… What did you do, Blaze? What did you do?!” I screamed as Legna’s body fell against me with a howl of pain.
I looked at Blaze standing behind her. Calm. Cold.
Still holding the weapon as blood dripped from it.
“He did exactly what I ordered him to do.”
Helen’s voice came through the fog as she appeared inside that horrible garden.
“Because I warned you, Isidora… not to betray me.”
And that was where I would face the worst betrayal of my life.
