ISIDORA
I left the roars of battle behind and pushed deeper into the impenetrable fog.
I hoped my instincts wouldn’t fail me. I didn’t want to repeat the mistakes of every woman who had made it this far.
I held my belly as I walked without knowing where I was going.
Still, I kept moving, resisting the voices of madness and the bitter energy that struck me again and again.
My skin felt like acid was eating through it, and the pressure made me gasp.
But just as I’d never given up during my training, I wouldn’t give up here either. I was willing to do anything.
“Vhaelor, I know you’re here! Come with me, my King. Let’s go home!”
I shouted into the emptiness, but no one answered.
My steps grew slower and slower, as if the fog had turned into hands holding me back.
But my wolf kept telling me he was close, and at last, I reached a place where the fog cleared.
My eyes
widened at the enormous tree rising before me, its twisted branches seeming to cover the entire sky.
If the trees in the forest where we’d faced the trial had been frightening, this one was terrifying.
The wood was so dark it almost looked like ink was seeping from it.
“That’s where that woman is. I can feel her presence… and she’s incredibly powerful,” Varka said, her voice sounding far away.
The connection between us was weakening.
“I know you can see me. I know you’re listening… Liora.”
The moment I said her name, a cold breeze stirred the withered leaves.
“I’ve come to stand before you today, to ask your forgiveness for what they did to you. I know you believe the Estingias owe you…”
As soon as I said it, the wind lashed harder, and a roar erupted from inside the tree, shaking the entire trunk.
It was gut–wrenching and so loud that I had to cover my ears to keep them from bleeding.
My already drained energy was dropping fast, and before I could even open my mouth again, a beast burst from the darkness and attacked me.

“GET AWAY! HE DOESN’T RECOGNIZE US ANYMORE!”
Varka warned me just in time, and I threw myself aside.
Deep gouges appeared where I’d been standing, left behind by enormous claws.
I jumped back to my feet, panting and sweating.

I stared straight into the ruby eyes of the gigantic lycan silhouetted beneath the branches of that cursed tree.
“It’s me, my King! Vhaelor, I’m your mate! I’m Isidora!”
I screamed at him, but all I got in return was another roar and a head–on attack.
Varka couldn’t get through to her mate, and Vhaelor was already giving in to the madness.
I fought him however I could. I used everything I had, but I no longer had the strength of a powerful Estingia.
One backhanded swipe from that enormous hand sent me flying into the tree trunk, where I collapsed.
I watched him through my swollen eyes as he advanced like a messenger of death.
“Blaze… remember me. Remember everything we’ve been through…”
The words slipped from my wounded lips, stained with my own blood.
The moonlight could barely illuminate the scene, but he stopped for a second, and my heart trembled with hope that I’d finally gotten through to him.
“It’s me… your lady… I came to find you…”
I tried to reach out. I tried to push myself up, but suddenly, something came out of the trunk.
It felt like slick vines, and when I looked down at my stomach, dark female hands, as if they were made from the same bark, were gripping my flesh.
“Ah!” I cried out as her nails dug into my belly.
The dull ache there had never gone away.
The weight only kept growing, and I could still almost hear those tiny heartbeats.
I couldn’t move. Something lifted me, leaving my legs dangling as I was pinned against the trunk… by
someone.
“Lycan King, I have the woman you’re willing to betray and kill for…”
A voice that sounded as if it came from the grave echoed right beside my ear.
I felt her rotten breath
