Elessia answered him, and Cassian could’ve sworn he heard his own heart break.

His wolf whimpered. Cassian opened his mouth, but no words came.

Elessia didn’t even realize what her answer had done to her mate. All at once, she reached inward for the thread connecting her to her wolf… only to discover a horrible truth.

“Where’s Syla? I can’t feel my wolf, Dora… Where’s my Omega?!” She screamed, pressing a hand to her chest and then her stomach.

That was where she’d been hurt the worst.

Tears filled her eyes. A second later, Isidora’s arms were around her.

Elessia clung to her, realizing things were far worse than Isidora was letting on.

Her Omega wolf was gone.

“She’s only sleeping to protect you. She’ll come back, Ele. You’ll get Syla back. I promise…”

The Queen looked at the King, seeking comfort from her mate.

Vhaelor nodded and let his protective aura settle around Isidora.

Elessia sobbed in her arms, and through it all… Cassian might as well have been a stranger.

He should’ve been the one comforting her, giving her strength.

He was dying to pull her into his arms and hold her against his chest, but what right did he have…?

“She… she doesn’t recognize us. She can’t feel us without her wolf… Where’s my Omega, Cassian? WHERE’S MY MATE?!” Kyron roared inside him, losing his mind with anguish.

Cassian had no answer.

He had to get out of that room. The guilt was choking him.

Because this was his fault.

Her wolf had probably sacrificed herself to keep Elessia alive.

Because he hadn’t even been strong enough to stop them from tearing his mate apart like that.

He drove his fist into the stone wall, punching out a small crater and smearing the rock with his blood.

He hung his head, eyes red, helplessness eating him alive.

A moment later, the crushing weight of the King’s presence filled the hallway behind him. Vhaelor had followed him out.

“If you want to hold your head high in front of your mate again, find the ones who did this,” Vhaelor told him, his voice hard.

Cassian raised his head and stared out into the distance. The day had gone on far too long.

“My mother’s servant planned it with her son and another warrior. When my mother confronted her, the servant attacked her and tried to escape, but she died in the struggle.”

He finally turned to face the towering King he’d always admired.

“I sent trackers after those sons of bitches…” he said. The hatred inside him only grew as he spoke.

Vhaelor went quiet for a moment, studying him.

He didn’t need to say a word. Cassian knew exactly what he was thinking.

He’d spent too many years at Vhaelor’s side, handling his personal matters and the affairs of the realm.

He knew the King too well.

“If my mother did this, I won’t cover for her. You have my word. No matter how much it tears me apart… I’ll see this through to the end.”

His voice never wavered, but his gaze shifted toward the closed bedroom doors.

“When she remembers… I have to avenge her. It’s the only way she’ll accept me.”

Vhaelor decided to let Cassian sort things out with his mate.

But he wasn’t letting this matter go.

He’d give Cassian the chance to handle it first. The man needed this.

Vhaelor knew he blamed himself for failing to protect her.

“Be patient with her. She doesn’t remember you. Without her wolf, she can’t feel you the way she used to…. Don’t overwhelm her.”

“I won’t. But I’m not leaving my mate’s side either. I can still feel her, and I’ll wait until she recognizes me.”

Vhaelor let out a heavy sigh, knowing this would cause trouble with Isidora.

But he understood Cassian and would support him however he could.

Still, something told him this was Cassian’s best chance to get close to Elessia.

Once she remembered everything… it wouldn’t be so easy for Cassian.
