Chapter 70 Base Rules

Another woman was running for her life.

Spotting their vehicles, she sprinted over, her screams piercing the air.

“Help! Please help me!”

However, her plea died on her lips. Zombies lurking along the roadside pounced, biting straight into her neck.

Jenna leaned forward, recognition dawning on her face. “It’s Rebecca Jones and Clara Simmons!” she cried.

Everyone in the vehicles pressed against the windows, watching in horror but unable to look away.

The two women were the ones who’d refused to go with Iris, stubbornly choosing to return home.

Their houses weren’t far from the factory. Despite Iris‘ warning that zombies might infest it, they wouldn’t listen.

Clearly, they’d rushed back, found their house overrun, and fled -only to be hunted down by the starved undead.

The ravenous zombies had locked onto them the moment they appeared, leaving no room to hide.

The survivors watched in silence as the women were torn apart and devoured, their bodies twitching violently moments later as zombification took hold.

A roar of engines cut through the grim scene.

The lead armored vehicle–driven by Iris–revved its engine, plowing through the zombie clusters without hesitation. Wheels crushed the undead beneath them, carving a safe path through

the chaos.

The rest of the convoy followed closely, leaving the sight behind.

Once they were out of danger, a wave of relief washed over the group, doubling their sense of security.

They silently thanked their luck for choosing to follow Iris, not stubbornly try to go home like those two.

The world was a wasteland of zombies; no place was truly safe.

You couldn’t afford to be naïve.

Iris had promised safety within her territory–and that promise nowy felt like a lifeline.

The convoy raced toward the outskirts, eventually coming to a stop at a cluster of villas.

The moment Iris stepped out, Nathan–along with his wife and children–hurried over from Villa 9.

“Ms. Hale! You’re back!” he greeted warmly.

Iris nodded, waving for the passengers in the five or six vehicles

behind her to disembark.

“This will be your new home,” she announced to the survivors,

then turned to Nathan.

“Take them to start farming and production.”

Food was their most basic need–stable harvests must come

before any other expansion.

They would take things step by step.

Nathan nodded firmly. “Understood, Ms. Hale!”

“Gather around, everyone. I’ll go over the base rules,” Iris called, drawing the group’s full attention.

“Everyone who joins my base uses a points system.

“You can trade points for food, water, supplies, and tools.”

Iris pulled out a detailed list she’d prepared earlier and handed it to Nathan. “Nathan, post this on the community bulletin board later.”

It listed the exchange rates clearly: one pound of oats or quinoa for one point, one pack of salt for one point, one egg for one point, one pound of pork for 10 points, one live chicken for 50 points, and so on.

She then explained how to earn points, which matched the exchange rates.

“Anything you grow or make can trade for points. Also, killing zombies and collecting crystal cores gets you rewards.”

Iris held up a crystal core to show the group.

“Kevin, you recorded how many cores each person collected earlier. Each core is worth one base point for now. But from now on, any crystal core you hunt yourselves will be worth 10 points each!”

Kevin and the others gasped in shock.

They quickly realized points were the base’s currency.
