"The boss already took Petty upstairs," Jay said.

He didn't want to linger and stretched out his long legs to leave.

But Amy hurried to keep pace with him, faking another yawn as she said, "By the way, Jay, I suddenly remembered we met a long time ago, didn't we?"

This yawn was real; when Jay glanced over at her, her eyes were actually watery and heavy with exhaustion.

"Right."

He always had an exceptional memory. He remembered everyone he met, not to mention he had done thorough background checks on all of Petty's colleagues. Of course he remembered Amy.

Amy cursed inwardly at his refusal to play by the rules. She had planned for him to say he didn't remember, which would allow her to smoothly bring up how their first meeting was at The White Group when she filled in for Petty to interview Franco.

Wouldn't that have been a perfect conversation starter?

But Jay actually remembered!

Even though her prepared script was ruined, the simple fact that "Jay remembered" was enough to make the corners of her mouth twitch upward.

She feigned nonchalance, clearing her throat with a soft, flirtatious laugh. "So you do remember. I really didn't expect that."

Jay remained entirely unmoved by her charm. His face was a blank slate as he kept walking straight toward the exit.

"Are you still working this late?" Amy asked.

"Going to kill someone," Jay said flatly.

He figured this would be enough to scare her off. After all, Amy came from a highly educated, law-abiding family. Good, upstanding citizens like her were usually the easiest to terrify.

But instead of shrinking back in fear, Amy's eyebrows shot up in excitement. "Oh, I'm super familiar with that! I grew up following my mom to work overtime and I've seen countless autopsies. I know exactly how to dispose of a body. I can totally help you."
