Gideon paused slightly.
He knew his reaction had been excessive. Pulling her up from the floor with that much force had definitely hurt her.
But the mere thought of Nora touching the keepsakes holding all of his and Giselle's past had triggered a violent, territorial rage that instantly hijacked his mind and drowned out all reason.
These items represented the most secretive corners of his heart. Even he rarely looked through them, let alone allowed anyone else to taint them.
Gideon reached out and pulled the door open.
The dim, amber light from the wall sconces flooded the hallway.
He lifted his eyes and met Nora's completely bloodless face.
She hadn't gone far. She was leaning against the wall at the corner of the corridor, her legs weak, her entire body still trembling slightly. Hearing the door open, she looked up, her red, swollen eyes brimming with residual terror and helplessness as she stared straight at the man emerging from the room.
At the other end of the hall, Franklin—having heard the commotion—was rushing upstairs with several maids in tow, looking deeply concerned.
Gideon's expression remained icy. His gaze shifted from Nora to the terrified maids hovering by the stairs.
"Fire every maid who allowed my wife onto the second-floor hallway. Have them pack their things and leave immediately."
Hearing that, the maids turned ashen; one was so frightened she collapsed onto the carpet.
Leaning against the wall, Nora stumbled as the words hit her.
Her eyes widened, staring in sheer disbelief at Gideon's cold profile.
Did he really have to go this far just for Giselle?
