Ellie’s POV
Terence’s house was located further up the mountain, situated in a secluded spot overlooking the valley below; hence why I hadn’t noticed it before. It was bigger than the other houses in the village, more sprawling, but with none of the over-the-top opulence of the lower territories’ Alpha houses. Staff were moving around in the fading sun, finishing up their work in the gardens, and somewhere, a rooster was currently making a lot of noise to announce the end of the day.
Dominic looked at me as he put the car in park in front of the house.
“Are you sure you want me to come with you?” he asked. “If you’d rather have the privacy, I can pick you up later.”
I glanced at him. “Would you rather not be here?”
The tips of his ears reddened. “No, actually. I’m glad you invited me.’
I smiled, but only faintly, and then we got out of the car. Terence was waiting by the door when we approached, already open, wearing an apron over his suit.
“Come in,” he said. The inside of the house was warm and smelled delicious. “I was just finishing up dinner.”
Dominic and I stopped in the entryway, looking around. The walls were painted a warm color and the ceilings were low. Long corridors split off in either direction, with an entrance into the main living area directly in front. We followed Terence through the well-appointed living room, where a fire was crackling in the fireplace, and into the dining room, which had a large bay window looking out over the landscape.
“You have a beautiful home,” I said, turning slowly as Terence hurried back into the kitchen.
“Thank you,” he called out. “I didn’t want to waste too many precious resources on building an extravagant home, but the Alpha house should always showcase the pride of the pack, so I did my best when designing it to make it stand out without being over the top.”
“You did an excellent job of that,” Dominic said, following him into the kitchen. I remained in the dining room, turning slowly to take it all in.
I stopped when I spotted a portrait hanging on the wall over the fireplace. A woman with bright golden eyes and a proud smile. Her shoulders were pulled back, her dark brown hair braided into two long braids down each side, cuffed by silver and gold metal. She wore armor that almost seemed to gleam with a light of its own with the way the artist painted it.
“Ah. That’s your mother,” Terence said softly, appearing behind me. “You’re her spitting image. Aside from the eyes.” He gestured to his own.
