Dominic’s POV
The cold hit the side of my face the moment I stepped out of the clinic, and for once, I was glad for it.
I walked without picking a direction. I made my way down the narrow street, past the shuttered shops with their windows dark, my loafers sliding on the icy ground. Ellie had been right about these shoes; I would have been a popsicle laying in a ditch long before I made it back to the hotel last night, were it not for her letting me sleep on her sofa.
Apparently, I may have killed her in a past life, and she had let me sleep on her sofa.
It still didn’t make any sense.
She died.
My mate died, and I was there when it happened, and now she was back, and I didn’t remember any of it but somehow she did and…
“What the fuck?” I whispered to myself. My voice fell flat amongst the snow and the quiet streets, not even echoing back at me.
I thought about her story as I walked, looking for the cracks in her logic, the places where the tale should have fallen apart and revealed itself as just that: a story. It seemed like the most reasonable thing-that she was spinning yarns, perhaps vying for my attention, or perhaps she’d hit her head at some point. There had to be some flaw in her story, something indicating that it wasn’t true.
But no matter how hard I looked, there was none. That was the thing. Every strange, jagged piece of the past year slid into place the moment I searched for a flaw. The wedding day, when she’d slipped a knife into my ribs with a haunted look on her face-she’d mentioned trauma. Trauma that I now understood as being caused by events in a life that I didn’t remember.
Then there was the festival, when she vanished without a word and came back with no explanation. She said it was because she caught the assassin again and, in order to protect herself, she’d quietly investigated rather than telling me where she went. She’d let me believe she was in cahoots with Lucas that day when she was really seeking answers.
Then, of course, there was the way she always seemed to know what would happen before it actually happened, like “miraculously” finding Colt and bringing him to meet Vivian, and all of the other countless times it happened.
It was impossible. It was insane.
