Episode 19-1
THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH
Chapter 19: The Calm Before
Damien was waiting in the main hall when I entered.
He looked terrible. Dark circles under his eyes, his usual perfect grooming disheveled, stress radiating from him in waves. The moment he saw me, he crossed the room quickly.
“Sera, thank the Goddess. I’ve been trying to reach you all day.”
“I was training.”
“For two days straight?” His eyes searched my face, and I watched him register the changes. The silver in my eyes. The way I held myself differently. The complete absence of the bond that used to pull us together. “What happened to you?”
“I became what I needed to be.”
“The bond.” His hand went to his chest. “It’s gone. How is that possible?”
“Turns out artificial bonds can be broken.” I kept my voice level. “Especially by someone who knows they’re artificial.”
He staggered back. “You knew? How long have you known?”
“Long enough.” I moved past him toward the stairs. “I’m tired, Damien. I need to rest before the Council
session.”
“Wait.” He grabbed my arm, and I felt nothing. No warmth, no pull, no manufactured affection trying to
convince me I belonged to him. “We need to talk about this. About what happened on Monday.”
“What happens on Monday is I answer the Council’s questions and defend my actions.” I pulled my arm free. “Unless you’re planning to throw me to them?”
“Of course not. You’re still my Luna. My mate.”
“I’m not your mate. I never was.” The words came out calm, factual. “The bond was fake, created by the Council to keep me controllable. But you felt it too, didn’t you? You believed it was real.”
His face went pale. “That’s not possible. I chose you. I loved you.”
“You loved a bond that told you to. And when Vivian came along and offered something you wanted more, you chose her instead.” I started up the stairs. “The Council session is Monday at noon. I’ll be ready. Will
you?”
I left him standing in the hall, looking like his world had just collapsed.
Good. Let him feel a fraction of what I’d felt.
Episode 19-4
The pack was buzzing with energy all weekend.
Charm
Word had spread about my separation from Damien, about the severed bond, about the upcoming Council session. Wolves I’d never spoken to approached me with messages of support. Omega families brought me food, flowers, small tokens of gratitude.
The pack was splitting, I realized. Those who supported traditional hierarchy versus those who wanted change.
And I was becoming the symbol of that change whether I wanted to be or not.
Sunday afternoon, Marcus found me in the library reviewing Council procedures.
“There are fifty–three wolves who’ve pledged to stand with you tomorrow.” He set down a list of names. “Lucas organized them. If the Council tries anything, if they attempt to force you into submission, we have
numbers.”
“That’s dangerous. The Council could punish the entire pack.”
“They’re willing to risk it.” He sat across from me. “Sera, you’ve changed things here. The omegas are organizing. The younger wolves are questioning why rank should determine worth. Even some of the higher families are reconsidering their positions.”
“Because I broke some rules?”
“Because you showed them a Luna doesn’t have to be weak.” He smiled. “You’re terrifying the old guard.
And inspiring everyone else.”
My phone buzzed. Katherine.
Katherine: Council Member A
will be attending tomorrow. He’s the one you need to watch.
He’ll try to provoke you into losing control. Stay calm.
Me: Easy for you to say.
You’ve
Katherine: You’ve died once. You’ve broken an artificial bond. You’ve accessed your core power. You can
handle one Council meeting.
Γ
Adrian: She’s right. And if he tries anything, I’ll be there. Front row.
I stared at the message. “Adrian is coming?”
“Apparently, several Alphas requested to observe. It’s unusual, but within Council rules.” Marcus leaned forward. “Sera, tomorrow is going to be brutal. They’re going to try to humiliate you, break you down, make
you submit.”
“I know.”
“I need you to promise me something.” His gray eyes were intense. “No matter what they say, no matter what they accuse you of, don’t lose your temper. The moment you react emotionally, they win.”
