THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH

Chapter 27: Shadows and Allies

The next morning, I woke to find Adrian already gone and a note on his pillow.

Following the money trail. Back by tonight. Don’t do anything reckless without me.

I smiled despite everything. As if I’d wait for permission to be reckless.

My phone buzzed. Katherine.

Katherine: School students arrive today. I know you have a war to prepare for, but do they need to meet

their Alpha? 10 AM?

Right. The school. In everything that had happened, I’d almost forgotten we were expecting the first group

of young daughters.

Me: I’ll be there.

I dressed carefully, choosing clothes that projected strength without being intimidating. The young daughters would be nervous enough without their Alpha looking like she was heading into battle.

Even if I was.

The school has been set up in the old Pack House library, expanded and renovated. Katherine and Elena

had transformed it into a beautiful space with training mats, meditation areas, and walls lined with texts about their daughter’s history.

Six young women waited when I arrived. Ages ranging from sixteen to twentythree, all looking terrified

and hopeful in equal measure.

Good morning,I said gently. I’m Sera. Welcome to Crescent Moon.

Alpha Sera,” one of them corrected, her voice awed. She was maybe eighteen, with dark skin and goldflecked eyes. The seventh generation. The one who conquered death.

I winced. That story’s gotten a bit exaggerated.

Has it?Katherine smiled knowingly. Sera, meet your students. This is Jade, second generation. Maya, third generation. Riley, Hannah, and Simone, all fourth generation. And thisShe gestured to the youngest, a sixteenyearold with silverstreaked black hair like mine. Is Lily. Fifth generation.

Lily looked at me with something like worship. You’re really her. The Luna who broke the Council.

I challenged them. I didn’t break them.I moved closer. And you don’t need to be in awe of me. I’m just a wolf who got tired of being controlled.

You’re the reason I could come out of hiding,Lily said softly. My parents were going to keep me hidden

forever. After what happened to the others.. they were terrified. But when you became Alpha, when you survived, they finally believed it was possible.

Her words hit harder than I expected. These girls had spent their lives hiding, terrified of being discovered, watching previous generations die mysteriously.

And I’d given them hope.

You’re safe here,I said firmly. All of you. Crescent Moon is a sanctuary for daughters. Anyone who tries

to hurt you will answer to me.”

What if the traditionalist coalition attacks?Riley asked. She was one of the older ones, maybe

twentytwo. We heard about it yesterday. About Council Member Harrison.

Of course, they’d heard. Pack gossip traveled at light speed.

Then you’ll be protected. We have warriors, we have defenses, and we have something they don’t.” I let the silver light flicker around my hands. We have my daughter’s magic. Together, we’re stronger than any

coalition.

Will you teach us?Maya spoke up. How to fight? How to use our gifts?

Katherine and Elena will teach you control and technique. I’ll teach you how to survive.I looked at each

of them. But first, I need to know what your abilities are. Every daughter is different.

They went around the circle. Jade could manipulate emotions, feeling and influence what others felt.

Maya had prophetic dreams. Riley could create shields, protective barriers of pure energy. Hannah healed, as my mother had. Simone could track any wolf she’d met, no matter the distance.

And Lily, the youngest, had no idea what her gift was yet. Fifthgeneration powers typically manifested

around seventeen.

We’ll figure yours out,” I told her. Sometimes gifts reveal themselves when you need them most.

Is that what happened to you?she asked. Did yours manifest when you needed them?

I thought about dying in a frozen river, about coming back six months in the past, about breaking the

artificial bond.

Yes. Mine manifested exactly when I needed them to survive.

After the students left for their first official lesson with Katherine, Marcus found me.

We have a problem.

Only one? That’s an improvement.I followed him to the security office.
