“Politics.” I made a face I hate it, but apparently it’s part of the job.”
“You’re getting better at it. Last year you would have just thrown them out.”
“Last year I wasn’t responsible for seventeen vulnerable students and a newborn daughter.” I headed toward the nursery. “How are things at Clearwater?”
“Stable. We’ve adopted most of your reforms. The omega families are thriving.” Diana’s expression shifted. “But we’re hearing rumors. Other traditional packs are getting nervous. They see what happened at
Crescent Moon, how you defeated the Covenant, and exposed Apex Industries. You’re becoming a
symbol.”
“A symbol of what?”
“Change. Progress. The possibility that the old ways don’t have to be the only ways.” She paused. “Sera, packs are splitting. Young wolves want reform, older wolves want tradition. It’s creating conflicts.”
“Conflicts that could become
violence?”
“Already has two territories. Nothing major yet, but the tension is building.”
I reached the nursery, where Katherine held Luna. My daughter was awake, silver eyes tracking movement
with uncanny awareness.
“I need to think about this. Thanks for the warning, Diana.”
After disconnecting, I took Luna from Katherine, settling into the feeding chair.
“You heard?” I asked.
the
“Every word. The reformed packs are inspiring resistance in traditional territory.” Katherine sat across from me. “We knew this would happen. Change doesn’t occur in a vacuum.”
“I know. I just hoped we’d have more time before the backlash started.” Luna latched on, feeding with the same fierce determination she showed in everything. “What do we do?”
“We do what we’ve always done. Offer support to those who want reform, defend those who need protection, and stay ready for whatever comes next.”
“Spoken like someone who’s been fighting this battle for decades.”
“I have been. The difference now is we’re winning.” Katherine smiled. “Slowly, painfully, but winning
nonetheless.”
That night, Adrian returned from Seattle with news.
The federal investigation is proceeding faster than expected. They’ve found mass graves, torture facilities, evidence of experiments going back twenty years.” He collapsed into a chair, exhausted. “Apex Industries‘ stock had crashed. Board members are resigning. Several executives are facing criminal charges.”
Episode 36
“And the supernatural angle?”
“Buried. Officially, the genetic material came from ‘exotic animals‘ and ‘rare medical samples.‘ Authorities aren’t questioning it too closely because the human rights violations are so extensive.” He rubbed his face. “But, Sera, there’s something else. Something I found in Pierce’s private files.”
“What?”
He pulled out a flash drive. “Covenant membership list. Not just operatives, but supporters, financiers, sympathizers. Over three thousand names.”
My blood ran cold. “Three thousand people supporting supernatural genocide?”
“Not all are actively involved. Some just donated money, attended meetings, and believed the ideology.
But yes, three thousand people who think we’re threats to be eliminated.”
“We can’t fight three thousand people.”
“We don’t have to fight thems
Xpose them.” He plugged in the drive, showing me the data. “Release
this list publicly, let human society deal with them. Most are wealthy, powerful, and respected. They won’t
survive public association with illegal human experimentation.”
“That’s social destruction.”
“That’s justice. They supported kidnapping, torture, and murder. They don’t deserve protection.” His eyes were hard. “These people would have killed Luna if they’d gotten the chance. Would have dissected her to see what made her powerful. I won’t lose sleep over ruining their reputations.”
He was right. But releasing three thousand names would send shockwaves through human society.
Wealthy donors, corporate executives, and even some politicians are on this list.
“Give me twenty–four hours to think about it. A decision this big requires careful consideration.”
“Fair enough.” He set aside the drive. “How’s Luna?”
“Eating well, growing fast, occasionally glowing with power when she’s upset.” I smiled despite everything. “Perfectly normal for a supernatural infant.”
“Our daughter is many things, but normal isn’t one of them.” He moved to the crib where Luna slept, watched her with such love, and wondered that it made my chest ache. “She’s going to change the world,
isn’t she?”
“Probably. Whether she wants to or not.”
“Then we’d better make sure it’s a world worth changing.”
I joined him at the crib, and together we watched our daughter sleep.
Outside, the supernatural world was fracturing. Traditional packs versus reformed ones. European Alphas demanding control. Three thousand Covenant sympathizers waiting to be exposed. Political tensions are
rising.
Episode 38-3-
But at that moment, watching Luná breathe, feeling the mate bond warm between us, I felt something unexpected.
Hope.
We’d survived death, war, conspiracy, and impossible odds.
Whatever came next, we’d survive that too.
Together.
