Episode 40-1
THE LUNA WHO CONQUERED DEATH
Chapter 40: Growing Pains
Luna was one month old when she spoke her first word.
Not babbling. Not random sounds. A clear, deliberate word.
“Mama.”
I was feeding her at three in the morning, exhausted and half–asleep, when her silver eyes focused on
mine and she said it.
“Adrian!” I called out, not caring that it was the middle of the night. “Adrian, she just spoke!”
He stumbled into the nursery, hair disheveled. “What? Spoke? Babies don’t speak until at least six
months…”

daughter in shock and wonder and growing concern.
“This is accelerating,” Adrian said quietly. “She’s developing at what, six times normal speed now?”
“Dr. Moira estimated eight times during last week’s checkup.” I held Luna close, feeling her power humming just beneath the surface. “She has the cognitive development of an eight–month–old in a
one–month–old body.”
“That’s going to cause problems.”
“Already is. She gets frustrated when she can’t do things her mind thinks she should be able to do. Yesterday she tried to walk, fell, and nearly burned down the nursery when her power flared in frustration.”
Adrian ran a hand through his hair. “We need help. Someone who’s dealt with accelerated development
before.”
“Who? This is unprecedented. There’s never been a child born of seventh generation and hybrid bloodlines.” I looked at Luna, who was now studying her own hands with intense concentration. “We’re inventing parenting as we go.”
A knock at the door. Katherine entered, looking wide awake for the hour.
“I felt the power spike. What happened?”
“Luna said her first word.” I gestured to our daughter. “At one month old. We’re officially in uncharted territory.”
Katherine moved closer, studying Luna with professional interest. “May I?”
I handed Luna over carefully. Katherine held her, and Luna studied the older woman with those eerily

intelligent eyes.
“Grandma,” Luna said clearly.
Katherine nearly dropped her. “What?”
“She understands relationships. She knows you’re my mentor, so she’s using familial terminology.” I took Luna back. “She’s too smart for her age. It’s terrifying.”
“It’s also dangerous,” Katherine said bluntly. “A mind developing this fast without proper guidance could go wrong in countless ways. She needs structured learning, but at an infant’s pace it’s nearly impossible to provide.”
“What do you suggest?”
“I suggest we treat her as she is, not as she appears. She may look one–month–old, but mentally she’s eight
months or more. Talk to her like she understands, because she does. Teach her constantly. And most
importantly, help her understand her power before she accidentally hurts someone.”
As if on cue, Luna’s face scrunched up. She was getting hungry again, and silver light began flickering
around her.
“There it is,” Katherine said. “Power is tied directly to an emotional state. No control, no filter.”
I began feeding Luna, and the power faded. “I’ve been trying to teach her shielding, as I do with the
students. But she’s so young…”
“Age is meaningless in her case. She has the mental capacity to learn. Start teaching her everything you’d teach a year–old student.” Katherine headed for the door. “I’ll prepare lesson materials appropriate for her developmental level. We’re raising a prodigy, Sera. We need to treat her like one.”
After Katherine left, Adrian settled into the chair beside me.
“Our daughter is going to be extraordinary,” he said.
“Our daughter is going to be a handful.” I looked down at Luna, who was now making contented sounds while feeding. “What if we mess this up? What if we can’t give her what she needs?”
“Then we learn and adapt, as we’ve done with everything else.” He touched Luna’s tiny hand. “Besides, she has you as her mother. The woman who conquered death and changed the supernatural world. I think she’ll be just fine.”
Later that morning, Marcus brought concerning news.
“Three more traditional packs have requested visits. They want to see how we operate, learn our systems. He set down reports. “But there’s resistance too. A coalition of hardline traditional Alphas is forming. They’re calling our reforms ‘corruption of natural order.”
“How many in this coalition?”
“Twelve so far, but growing. Led by Alpha Gregory Blackthorne from the Southern Territories. He’s old,

powerful, and very vocal about his opposition to change.”
