The practical wisdom of his suggestion overrides my emotional desire to remain with my people. If Vega’s agents have found us once, they’ll likely find us again without significant intervention. Royal protection offers security beyond what our scattered community can maintain independently.
“I’ll go,” I decide, “but not alone. Any who wish palace protection should come with me.”
Word spreads quickly, five community members–those most vulnerable or with the smallest children- choosing to accompany me while others disperse in different directions according to the evacuation plan.

Relief floods through me despite the complicated feelings his presence creates. More selfishly, his companionship means facing court challenges with an ally who understands my background completely.
“We leave in ten minutes,” I agree, checking my horse’s girth strap one final time.
From a nearby ridge, scout signals an urgent warning–the strangers closing in faster than anticipated, clearly following a specific trail rather than general search patterns. They’ve somehow identified our exact location despite our careful concealment measures.
