Chapter 278
I nod, gratitude for his efficiency temporarily overriding anxiety. “The council meeting-”
“Can wait,” he interrupts firmly. “Lord Harrison will understand once I explain.”
“No.” I straighten my shoulders. “I need to be there. If Vega’s agents are operating this boldly within our borders, it’s not just Lyra at risk–it’s every healing bloodline in the kingdom.”
The council chambers buzz with tense conversation when I arrive, voices falling silent as I enter. I scan the faces quickly, noting who seems genuinely concerned versus those who might view attacks on healing communities as a convenient solution to “problems” of integration.
“Your Highness,” Lord Harrison greets me with a respectful nod. “We were just discussing the border situation.
“You mean the coordinated attacks on citizens under royal protection,” I correct, taking my place at the head of the table. “Let’s not minimize what’s happening.”
Lord Reynard clears his throat. “With respect, Your Highness, these hidden healing enclaves have never formally claimed kingdom citizenship nor sought royal protection until very recently.”
“Are you suggesting they deserve less protection because they’ve been forced to hide from persecution?” I ask, my voice dangerously quiet.
He backpedals immediately. “Of course not. I merely point out the practical challenges of extending protection to communities whose locations remain largely unknown to royal forces.”
“Then perhaps,” I suggest with forced calm, “we should focus on creating conditions where they no longer need to hide.”
tegration I might
The discussion that follows reveals the clear divide in my council–those who genuinel versus those who pay lip service while subtly undermining progress. Under normal circum navigate these political waters with more diplomacy. Today, with Lyra potentially in danger and my control hanging by a thread, I have little patience for them.
“Enough debate,” I finally cut in. “Captain Merrick’s forces will establish expanded patrols throughout the eastern territories. Any Northern agents found operating without diplomatic sanction will be detained for questioning.”
“Such aggressive action might be viewed as provocation by the Northern territories,” Lady Merrick cautions.
“Their agents tracking our citizens is the provocation,” I counter. “Our response is merely an appropriate defense.”
The bond flares instantly at the news, a surge of recognition that confirms his report before the words fully register. She’s close–close enough that our connection strengthens with each passing minute.
