Chapter 104

Kai

I hate impromptu royal meetings like this.

The dining hall of the royal palace is suffocating. Every breath I take feels like I’m inhaling the terrible, ugly scent of the Monpires sitting across from us. They look like humans, but their skin is too pale, their eyes too dark. Having them amongst us feels like a stain.

Meanwhile, Rina is practically glued to my left arm. Her fingers are tightly clenched around my arm as if she’s marking her territory in front of the entire royal court. I can feel her looking at me, her eyes seeking some kind of validation, but I keep my gaze fixed on the table.

I don’t want to be here. I want to be back at my apartment. I want to be in that basement, even if it’s just to argue with the girl I can’t stop thinking about.

“You’re remarkably quiet tonight, Kai,” my father, King Geo, says from the head of the table.

He swirls a glass of dark wine, his green eyes-the same eyes I see in the mirror every morning-fixed on me with a calculating intensity. He’s a man who

values power above all else, and right now, he looks pleased.

‘I’m glad to see you’re finally acting like a prince who understands his position,” King Geo continues. “Seeing you and Rina together like this is exactly the image this kingdom needs. It shows stability. It shows a future.”

Rina beams, leaning her head on my shoulder. The scent of her perfume is suffocating, and I have to fight the urge to pull away.

“Yes your highness. We’ve had such a wonderful time together lately, haven’t we, Kai? Honestly, we were just discussing how the bonding ceremony should be moved up. Why wait for months when we already know our destiny? We are ready to be mated together.”

Her father, Giuseppe, lets out a loud laugh from across the table. “Spoken like a true Lycan of her bloodline! They are a perfect match, King Geo. A match that will solidify our kingdom for generations. My daughter is ready to take her place by his side.”

I feel a vein throb in my temple. I don’t look at Giuseppe, and I certainly don’t look at Rina. Instead, my gaze moves down the table to where Roman is sitting. He looks like hell. My fists left a roadmap of bruises across his face. Dark purple bruises are under his eyes, and his lip is still split and swollen. He’s staring at me with pure hatred. I glare right back, my hand tightening into a fist under the table until my knuckles turn white.

‘He’s still breathing,’ Vlad growls in the back of my mind. ‘That’s a mistake we need to fix, Kai. He touched our mate. He should be nothing but a memory!’

‘Another time, Vlad,’ I reply back internally. Vlad is not satisfied but at least he stays calm.

‘You’re a coward, Kai,’ a different voice suddenly slices into my mind.

I glance at my sister Kara. She’s sitting a few seats away, staring at her untouched plate of steak with a look of disgust. She isn’t even pretending to enjoy

the meal.

‘You’re sitting here playing house with that snake Rina while Lyra is rotting in the dark,’ Kara links to me, her mental voice dripping with venom. “Do you evew

have a soul left at this point?’

‘Stay out of my head, Kara,’ I link back, my mental voice sharp. ‘You don’t know what happened in that garden. You didn’t see what I saw.’

‘I don’t care what you saw. Even if she’s involved with someone else, she has a right to. She’s her own person. What you should have done is try to fight for her she retorts, her eyes finally flicking to mine. They are full of disappointment. ‘But because you’re a coward, you’re taking it out on a girl who has done nothing but survive you. You know she’s your mate. You admitted it to Damon. And yet, here you are, letting Giuseppe talk about you like you’re a prize for his daughter. It’s

pathetic.

‘I said drop it!’ I snarl internally, the force of my thought making her flinch slightly in her seat.

“Kai?”

I blink, realizing the conversation has paused. My mother, the Queen, is looking at me. Her eyes are soft, filled with pity that makes my blood boil. My mother has never been close to me. But at the moment, it feels like she’s the only one truly seeing me.

“Is Princess Katarina truly who your heart chooses, my son?” she asks softly.
