Chapter 106
Lyra
I gasp as I snap my eyes open, my heart beating so hard I think it might actually burst. My body is slick with sweat, and for a moment, I still feel like I’m falling while the world crumbles into darkness around me. I can still hear that King’s final words and the Queen’s cry as she was killed by that monster. The
sound of that monster, Yaros, screaming in rage still rings my ears.
I try to sit up, expecting to feel the cold stone of the basement floor. Instead, my hands sink into a thick, soft mattress.
I blink, looking around in total confusion. That’s when I realize I’m not in the dark anymore. I’m in a wide, luxurious room that smells faintly of rain and
cedar.
It’s a clearly masculine space, decorated in deep greys and blacks with quality wooden furniture. On the ceiling, there is a unique but scary looking piece of artwork. It’s a figure of a dark a beast mid-transformation, its eyes glowing with a faint, painted fire that seems to follow me no matter where I look.
Whose room is this? It’s not Kara’s, and it’s definitely not a regular student dorm.
My gaze moves across the room until it lands on a small table near the window. Resting right on the edge is a silver crown, sharp and regal.
Prince Kai’s crown.
My heart skips a beat, then starts racing for a completely different reason. I’m in Kai’s room. Panic flares in my chest as I try to remember how I got here. Did I sleepwalk or something? Or did he drag me back up to punish me more?
‘He carried you here,’ a voice says in my mind.
I freeze. “Wyndra?” I whisper out loud, my voice trembling.
‘The Prince brought you here himself,’ she continues, her voice sounding a little tired but definitely there. ‘He found you in the basement. You were screaming in
your sleep, stuck in that nightmare.’
I’m so shocked to hear her that I almost forget I’m in the lion’s den. “Wyndra!” I squeal, hugging myself. “You’re back! I thought you left me. I thought I’d
lost you for good after what I said.”
Wyndra lets out a snort, though I can feel her relief too. ‘Even if I wanted to abandon you, Lyra, I couldn’t. My spirit would bleed from the separation. We are
tied together whether we like it or not. I’m a part of you.’
ľ
“I’m so sorry,” I tell her, the guilt flooding back. “I was just so frustrated and angry at everything. I shouldn’t have gone off on you like that. You’re the only
one who has ever been on my side.”
“It’s fine,’ she says gently. I understand how you feel. Just believe me when I say that things will start to make sense very soon. You aren’t as alone as you think,”
I look down at the expensive silk sheets, feeling sad. ‘Anyway… why did the Prince bring me here? He wanted to punish me. He called me those horrible names and locked me away like an animal. Why the change of heart?”
‘I’m not sure,’ Wyndra admits. ‘But he looked… worried when he found you. You were thrashing around so much he had to pin you down just to wake you up before you stopped screaming and just passed out.’
My chest tightens. I feel a mix of embarrassment and anger. Why is he trying to be nice now? After treating me like shit and humiliating me in the worst way possible, he thinks bringing me to his fancy room makes it okay? It doesn’t.

Chapter 106
What dream did you have, anyway?’ Wyndra asks. From what I could feel, the dream must have been very terrifying. I couldn’t see it exactly, but I felt your fear
and shock before you started to scream..’
