Chapter 109
Kai
I stand at the foot of my bed, watching Lyra. She is completely speechless, her face pale as she processes the question I just asked her. She looks away from
me, her fingers twisting in the sheets.
“Um…I-I don’t..” She doesn’t finish the sentence as her voice trails off. Her silence tells me`more than her words ever could. Now I’m actually convinced that Lyra Diamond might not be what she seems. There is something hidden under that shy exterior, and I am going to find out what it is. I need to know
why she’s different.
The memory of when I found her in the basement still makes my chest tight. The moment I saw her lying there on the floor, an instant fear almost paralyzed me. She was trembling violently, her breathing was uneven, and her eyes were rolled into the back of her head. I was scared to death. I didn’t care
about Roman or the garden or my anger anymore. All I cared about was waking her up.
But the more I had tried to shake her, the more she screamed. It was a sound of pure agony, as if something or someone was attacking her from the inside. I couldn’t leave her in the basement so I scooped her up and brought her straight to my room. Once I got her on the bed, I had to splash a bit of cold water on her face just to break her from the trance. Thankfully, the screaming stopped and the trembling died down. The nightmare was over, but then something
else happened.
I was about to leave her to sleep when I heard her murmuring something. I leaned in close and that’s when I heard it. A name. She kept mentioning it over
and over like a prayer or a plea.
Astra.
But that isn’t the only strange thing I’ve noticed about her tonight. Lyra seems to have a companion. Like someone she talks to in her head. Just a few minutes ago, before I walked into the room, ! stood by the door and listened. I heard her voice clearly, even though she was alone in the room. I overheard
her calling someone “Wyndra.”
Based on the tone of her voice and the way she was responding, it sounded exactly like the way a shifter talks to their wolf.
I’m almost ninety percent sure she was talking to her wolf.
Could it be that she’s been lying about being wolfless this entire time? But it doesn’t seem possible. If she had a wolf, I should have scented it the moment we met. Every shifter carries the scent of their beast or wolf, but with Lyra, all I can ever smell is her. That sweet, addictive, and luscious scent that belongs only to her. It’s like honey and rain, and it drives me insane.
‘But there are times I smell something else,’ Vlad speaks up suddenly, his voice rumbling in my mind.
I stiffen. ‘What do you mean, Vlad? Why didn’t you tell me this before?’
‘Because you never let me explain!’ Vlad snaps back, sounding annoyed. ‘Every time I try to tell you she’s our mate and that there’s more to her, you shut me down or get angry. Why do you think I find her so irresistible? It’s not just the girl, Kai. She has something in her that is not just her.'”
I sigh and close my eyes for a moment, trying to process what my wolf is saying. If Vlad can smell something I can’t, then my suspicions are right. Either Lyra Diamond is a world-class liar who has found a way to hide her wolf’s scent, or she is something else entirely. Something special. Something rare.
I open my eyes and stare at her. She’s still avoiding my gaze, looking like she wants the bed to swallow her whole.
“I’m waiting, Lyra,” I say, my voice low. “Who is Astra? And who were you talking to before I came in?”

Chapter 109
Lyra shifts on the mattress, the mattress rumbling under her as she tries to put distance between us. She looks me dead in the eye, though her hands are shaking. I don’t understand what you’re talking about, Kai. I wasn’t talking to anyone and I don’t know anyone named Astra. You must have misheard me or
something.”
I stare at her in silence, narrowing my eyes and searching for the hint of a lie. She’s good, but she’s not that good. I can tell she’s hiding something.
“What’s your full name?” I ask suddenly.
She looks taken aback, her brow furrowing in confusion. “What do you mean? My name is Lyra. That’s it. You know that.”
“And how long did you live in the Valeria pack?”

Chapter 110
“Um… all my life,” she says, her voice rising with frustration. “Why are you asking me these weird questions? First some random name, now my history? I’m just a girl from a small pack. There’s nothing else to tell.”
I don’t answer immediately. Instead, I move closer, sitting on the edge of the bed so I’m facing her fully. I catch her eyes as it involuntarily trails down my chest, tracing the lines of my muscles before she realizes what she’s doing. When our eyes meet again, her face flushes a deep crimson shade and she quickly looks away toward the wall.
A small smile touches my lips at her reaction. Despite everything, the pull between us is still there, humming like a live wire.
“Look, I say, my voice dropping to a more serious tone. “I know you hate me right now. know I haven’t exactly made things easy for you. But if you want to have any chance at surviving here at Krypton Academy and in this kingdom, you have to open up. You have to try to be truthful with me, okay?”
Lyra snaps her head back toward me, her blue eyes flashing with a sudden, sharp anger. “I can’t believe you’re seriously saying that to me right now!
Truthful? You think I’m the problem?”
She leans forward, her voice trembling with emotion.
“If there’s anyone that’s a threat to my life, it’s you! You’re the one who locks me up, you’re the one who screams at me, and you’re the one who treats me
like I’m nothing.”
