Wyndra said she can’t make the shift happen the sold me it’s my up to the f

human.

I find a sturdy stick on the ground and grip it right in my right hand. I take a pee of the and may day and to r better grip on the sharp stones.

‘It’s a suicide mission, Lyra, Wyndra whispers. You know that, righ

“I know,” I whisper back. “But I’m not failing

‘Fine. I’ll be with you. I’ll guide you’

I take a deep breath and reach for the first ledge. I start to climb. The stone is sharp and sough against my skan As I move up showly. Wyndra stays alert. She’s like a second pair of eyes inside my head

‘Left!” she yells.

A small green snake langes from a crack in the rock. I swing the stick, knocking it away before it can sink its fangs into my arm. it fals down into the mist below.

‘Right! Above you!”

I duck my head as another snake strikes. I use the stick to shone it off the edge. My progress is slow, Every few inches is a battle. By

muscles are already starting to scream, and the wind is picking up, making the mountain rougher. But I’m still abe

I don’t know how long has passed. It feels like hours, but it could have been minutes. I’m still climbing, still fighting off stakes. I’ve reached almost halfway up the mountain, and my hands are a mess. They are bruised, red, and bleeding from the sharp edges of the

stone.

My breathing is haggard. Every gasp of air feels like I’m swallowing needles. I’m exhausted. My legs are shaking so badly I’m afraid they’ll give out. I don’t think I can see this through as a human. My strength is fading fast.

‘Don’t you dare give up, Wyndra says. Her voice is the only thing keeping me pinned to the rock You’ve come too far to full now Look up Lyra. Keep looking up.”

Wyndra’s voice helps. It gives me a tiny spark of energy. I check the watch on my wrist. I have ten minutes left before the timer for ther Part One test runs out and Part Two begins. I have to make it to the top.

I take a deep breath and reach for a black stone. I’m past the halfway point now For a moment, 1 haven I seen one in a few minutes. I let out a small sigh of rebel.

Suddenly, a massive, black snake slides out from a hole in the rock. It moves so fast I don’t even see it coming.

‘Lyra! Don’t let it get you! Wyndra screams.

The snake lunges at my face. I quickly jerk my head back and even lose my balance. My feet slip off the tiny ledge. The stick drops from my hand, making a loud clang as it hits the mountain and then vanishes into the darkness. I scream in terror as my fingers slip and I fall backwards, away from the rock, into the open air.

Kai

I’ve been watching Lyra as she continues to climb the mountain. She is so small, a tiny figure surrounded by snakes. Every move she

makes is slow and calculated. She uses a stick to knock snakes away, her human hands holding the rock until her knuckles are bruised.

‘All the other students have shifted, Kai. They’re moving through the trial without being attacked. The snakes are ignoring the wolves. Only Lyra

is being attacked.’ Damon mindlinks me.

I clench my fists tight. I have to hold myself back from storming out of this room, breaking into her door, and plucking her out of that world. It is a virtual reality, but the programming is lethal. The snakes in there are real enough to kill. I don’t want her to hurt herself. I

don’t want to see her blood on that stone.

King Geo sits in the chair next to mine. He leans back, his eyes fixed on the monitor. A taunting smile plays on his lips.

“Wow, son,” he says in a smooth and mocking voice. “It seems like your wolfless slave is really determined to make it out as a human. I have to give it to her, though. Such a fragile but resilient thing. It’s almost a pity she’s wasting all that effort.”

I keep my hands jammed in my pockets because the urge to punch my father is so strong it makes my vision swim. I ignore him and focus on the girl on the screen.
