The moment the arrow hits Prince Kai’s chest, the hall erupts in chaos. Royals jump from their seats, screaming in alarm as chairs topple over and wine
glasses shatter all over the place.
“The Prince! The Prince has been hit!” someone shouts from the crowd.
No, no, no! This can’t be happening! My heart stops for a second before it starts racing with a terror I’ve never felt before.
“Kai!” 1 scream as I rush to his side. He’s slumped on the ground, his body heavy and limp, I drop to my knees and pull his head into my lap, calling his
name repeatedly.
“Kai! Wake up! Look at me!”
He doesn’t answer. He’s unconscious. I gasp when I see the gaping hole in his chest where the arrow sank in. The edges of the wound are glowing with a pulsing blue light. I watch in horror as blue veins start to trace their way up his neck and across his jaw. The poison is spreading fast. I lean down and put my ear close to his chest, and my blood runs cold.

He isn’t breathing.
Kara rushes to his side, her face pale and her eyes wide with tears. She grabs Kai’s hand, shaking him.
“Kai! wake up!” she sobs. She looks at me, her voice trembling. “Lyra, how did this happen? How did he get hit?”
“I…Someone shot at us,” I stutter as my hands tremble so hard that I can barely touch him. “From the garden. It was aimed at me. Kai… Kai pushed me away. He took the arrow for me.”
Kara gasps as she looks at the glowing wound on Kai’s chest. “Oh no. It’s a blue arrow. Demon fire. It’s lethal to Lycans. My brother… he’ll die in a few minutes if the poison fully consumes his heart.”
I stare at Kai’s pale face. No. I can’t let him die. Not like this. Not because of me.
I remember the night I restarted his heart when it stopped. I have to try and heal him. I have to use whatever is inside me.
‘No!’ Wyndra’s voice booms in my mind, sharper than I’ve ever heard it. ‘Lyra, stop! If the King or anyone else sees you using your abilities, you are dead. Healing can only be done by the phoenix fox. If you do it, they will know what you and you will be in grave danger!*
“I don’t care!” I scream back at her internally. “I can’t just let him die, Wyndra! He sacrificed himself for me!”
Wyndra tries to argue, telling me I’m being irrational, but I ignore her. I reach out my hand and try to place it over the glowing hole in his chest. But before
I can touch him, the sound of footsteps stops me as the King and the other royals come running towards us.
The Queen collapses the moment she sees her son’s condition. “My son! My precious boy!” she cries in a voice filled with agony.
King Geo looks down at Kai, his face a mask of cold fury. “Who did this? How was my son attacked in my own palace?”
Before I can open my mouth to explain, someone rushes to me and suddenly, I feel a violent yank on my hair. I yelp in pain as I’m dragged backward, away
from Kai.

Chapter 141
“You!” Kina screams; She’s the one holding my hair, her face twisted with a sick kind of vengeance. She turns to the King, pointing a finger at me.
“Your Highness! Kai’s slave did this! I saw it!”
The room goes silent. Every royal, every guard, and every lord stares at me. I feel the weight of their judgment like a physical blow. Am I about to be
accused of something I didn’t do yet again???-
“What?” I gasp, my eyes wide with shock. “What are you talking about? That’s a lie!”

Kara glares at Rina, standing up to face her. “Rina, what the hell are you saying? Lyra didn’t do this!”
