Chapter 153
Kai
I’m standing on the balcony of the training hall, and I’m about to snap the railing in half.
Below me in the courtyard, Roman is doing exactly what I knew he’d do. Playing the hero. I watch helplessly as he leans down and kisses Lyra. It starts off soft, the kind of sweet crap he thinks girls like, but then Lyra reaches up and yanks his collar. She pulls him into her, kissing him back like she actually means it. Like she wants him. Like she’s trying to erase the memory of my mouth on hers by replacing it with his.
My chest feels like it’s being carved open with a knife. Every muscle in my body is coiled, ready to jump over the ledge and end him. But I can’t. I fucking can’t because I have to let Lyra think I don’t want her anymore.
‘Well you fucking caused this. We could’ve claimed her since and she would be ours by now, instead of being with that fucker.‘ Vlad grumbles in my head,
sounding angry. He’s been in a very pissy mood these past few days. With reason of course.
‘Shut up, Vlad,‘ I growl back at him, my inner voice vibrating with force. My claws are starting to prick through my skin, itching to draw blood. “You know I’m
doing this to keep her alive. You saw the look in the old man’s eyes. You heard the threat.”
“But we’re powerful. We can protect what’s ours! Kai. She’s our mate. My nose says she’s ours, my soul says she’s ours, and frankly, my pride says she’s ours.”
‘Even if she’s our mate, it’s not that simple! I snap, watching them break the kiss. Lyra looks flushed, her eyes bright with a fire I haven’t seen since the
palace.
‘She’s either a wolfless slave, or a powerful Fox. There’s no way we can be together, either way.”
‘If you wish, keep living in denial. But you know deep down that down that for every minute we’re away from her, we’re losing our damn minds!”
Vlad goes quiet, though I can still feel his restless pacing in the back of my mind.
I feel a hand brush my shoulder. I don’t even have to look to know who it is. She hasn’t left my side for longer than five seconds. It’s almost unbearable at
this point.
“They really do look like a match, don’t they?” Rina says, leaning her head against my arm. I want to shake her off me and tell her to give me space, but I stay still. “Two low–lives finding love in the dirt. It’s almost poetic, really. I always though Roman had poor taste, but this is a new low even for him.”
I don’t answer. I just stand there frozen, letting her think she’s won. Every second I spend playing the part of her mate feels like I’m swallowing shards of glass. I can feel Lyra’s absence like a missing limb, a ghost pain that won’t go away. I see the way Roman tucks a strand of her silver hair behind her ear, and I have to look away before my Lycan explodes out of me and destroys everything.
“I have things to do. See you later Rina,” I mutter, pulling away from her without a second glance.
“But Kai, the royal dinner is in an hour. Your father expects us to attend..”
“Later, Rina. I need to train.”
I head straight for the sparring room in the academy. I need to hit something before I lose it and shift in the middle of the hallway. I burst through the double doors. The room is quiet, but as I walk toward the center, I freeze suddenly feeling exhausted and frustrated.
I stop near the door and find myself staring at it. I remember the last time she was here and I made her clean the bloody floor. I remember how I had her pinned against that door with my body trapped against hers. I remember the heat of her skin, the way her eyes defied me even when she was scared. I
