“I take it you saw them too, hmm?” she says, walking into the room, her boots clicking on the floor. “Roman’s really putting in the work, Kai. Flowers every morning, walking her to class, actually talking to her like she’s a person… he’s making you look like a real amateur. if I didn’t know better, I’d say she’s actually starting to fall for him.”

“Liars are so boring, brother,” Kara sighs, leaning against a weapon rack. “You’re dying inside. I can smell the misery coming off you in waves. Why did you kick her out? She saved your life. She reached into your chest and pulled you back from the dead, yet you treat her like she’s dirt. Is this the king you plan to be? One who discards those who cares for him?”

“You don’t know the stakes!” I roar, turning on her. “You think this is a game? You think I’m doing this because I want to? Father threatened to kill her, Kara! He said he’d hide her body where I’d never find it. I’m protecting her the only way I know how!”

Kara doesn’t even flinch at my outburst. She just looks at me with a pity that hurts worse than any insult.

“You’re protecting her by handing her to Roman? Bold strategy. Let’s see if she ever forgives you for it. Or if there’s even anything left of ‘her‘ to forgive you by the time Roman is done with her.”

She walks out, leaving me in a silence that feels like it’s screaming.

I stand there, my chest heaving, staring at my bruised knuckles. ‘She’s right, you know,‘ Vlad whispers, his voice unusually somber. A female like Lyra… she won’t wait forever. She has fire in her. If you don’t claim it, someone else will burn in it.”

I sigh, unable to say anything else.

A moment later, Damon slides into the room. He stays at the door, sensing the heavy, dark aura I’m putting off. He’s my best friend, but even he looks hesitant to approach me at this time.

“Kai.”

“What is it, Damon? Make it quick.”

“Well, I just wanted to inform you about your…runaway mate. My scouts say she’s digging into the restricted East Wing. She’s trying to find out what she is. I think she’s finding out about her Phoenix lineage, Kai. She’s looking for the Sun King books.”

I stop mid–swing, my arm frozen in the air. My heart hammers against my ribs. She’s out there digging into secrets that could get her in trouble with my father, and I’m stuck here playing house with a princess I hate. If she discovers the true length of her powers, she’ll be the most hunted creature in the

kingdom.

“Is she safe?” I ask, my voice sounding rough and foreign to my own ears.

“Roman is with her most of the time,” Damon says. “He’s also planning to take her on a special outing this weekend. Somewhere off the academy grounds. A private lake, I hear.”

“No,” I growl immediately, feeling my beast scratch my surface. “He isn’t taking her anywhere. I won’t allow it.”

Dah, jealousy looks good on you, Vlad chirps, trying to lighten the mood, though I can feel his own claws sharpening. ‘Maybe we should go bite Roman’s

head off? Just a little bit? As a treat?‘

I’m about to answer, about to tell Dabon to double the watch on her and block the gates, when the ground beneath me suddenly vibrates.

BOOM.

A massive explosion shakes the room. The sound is deafening a loud bang that breaks the high windows of the sparring area. Dust and pieces of stone fall from the ceiling, covering everything in a gray layer. I stumble, grabbing onto a weapon rack to keep my balance as the whole building creaks.

“What the hell was that?” Damon shouts, his claws already out and his eyes glowing amber.

I look out the shattered window and my heart drops into my stomach. Thick, black smoke is rising from the North Wing. The general dorms.
