The moment I reach the front of the general dorms, my lungs are filled with the thick scent of burning wood and burnt fur. Some wolves are getting burnt.

‘Move your ass, Kai! Vlad yells in my head. His voice isn’t just loud, it’s vibrating with a level of panic I’ve never felt from fém before. ‘Our mate is definitely

in there! I can smell her! She’s trapped in the heat! Save her now or I’ll tear our own soul apart!”

‘I’ll save her, Vlad! Calm the fuck down!” I growl back, but my heart is already beating a frantic rhythm against my ribs as I scan the destroyed building. It’s almost impossible to even find a spot where one can enter through. Everywhere is pure fire.

I start toward the main doors when Kara intercepts me. She’s covered in gray dust, her eyes wide. She grabs my arm in a tight grip.

“Kai! We’re under attack!” she yells over the roar of the flames. “It’s not just the explosion. There are rogue wolves jumping through the back walls- hundreds of them! They’re swarming the general hall from behind!”

1 freeze for a split second, my blood turning to ice. “Hundreds?”

“Yes! They’re already engaging the lower–level students. It’s a slaughter back there!”

I curse under my breath, my mind racing. This is a coordinated attack on Krypton Academy. Someone knew exactly where the defenses were weakest. I immediately open a mind–link to Damon.

‘Damon! Do you hear me?‘

‘Kai! It’s a mess at the main gate!‘

‘Forget the gate! Kara says there are hundreds of rogues breaching the back wall of the general dorms. Gather every academy guard and form a perimeter, And notify the King at the palace. Tell him to send the Royal Guard. Now!

‘On it,‘ Damon links back. ‘What about you? Where are you going? I think you should take the helicopter and fly to the palace as soph as possible. The rest of us will hold off.”

‘No. I’m going inside the general dorms.‘ I say, looking at the collapsing roof of the second floor. ‘I have to make sure everyone is out.‘

‘Kai, wait!‘ Damon’s voice sounds urgent in my head. If you’re looking for Lyra, I saw her at the cafe about an hour ago with her friends. It’s highly unlikely she’s back at the dorm yet. Don’t go into that building. The King will skin me alive if I let you walk into a furnace for no reason. Let the fire crew handle the building!

‘Unlikely isn’t good enough, Damon!‘ I snap, cutting him off. ‘I have to be sure!

‘Kai, listen to reason-”

I slam my mind shut, blocking his mind–link entirely. I don’t have time for reason. I don’t have time for the King’s orders.

De been secretly watching Lyra’s every move for days. I know exactly where her room is on the second floot. I know which window is hers. Even if I’m

supposed to avoid her, even if I’ve pushed her away to save her life, she still belongs to me. She’s my own little flower, and I’ll be damned if I let anything

happen to her while I’m standing outside.

I shift into my half form, my muscles bulging and my claws extending. I charge into the building and the heat hits me like a physical wall. The air is so thin

it burns my throat, but I push through.

The hallway is filled with so much smoke that I would’ve been blind if not for Lycan vision. I reach the first floor and see two younger wolves–level one

students–hiding under a fallen roof plank. They’re sobbing, their eyes red from the smoke.

“Get up!” I yell at them, lifting the burning wood with one hand. The heat sears my palm, but I don’t feel it. ‘Run out to the main door, now!”
