Later, Damon comes upstairs and tries to talk to me. He tells me that Kai is just hurting, that his Lycan is wounded, and that he will eventually come around if I just give him some time to heal. Even Roman comes to the room later that evening, his face pale and full of heavy guilt, whispering a quiet apology for causing all of this with his mistake. But I don’t look at him. I don’t answer any of them. I stay
completely speechless, trapped inside the dark winter of my own mind.
Days bleed into weeks, and the silence inside me doesn’t break. I spend every waking hour reliving that last, intense kiss in my head,
feeling the ghost of his lips against mine over and over again
I lie in bed, staring blankly at the ceiling, wondering how a single moment could have ruined everything so completely.
Four months later, I’m no longer completely speechless, but the heartbreak hasn’t faded even a little bit.
It has been four long, agonizing months of absolute silence from him. Four months of not seeing Kai’s face, not hearing his deep voice, or
getting a single word or text. The only time I ever see him is when I am forced to look at the social media buzz pages on my phone,
which is a form of self-torture I can’t seem to stop.
Every single week, there are new photos of him plastered all over the internet. Prince Kai attending royal galas in the capital. Prince Kai
showing up at high-profile charity events. Prince Kai looking perfectly regal, cold, and distant, standing side-by-side with his damn
betrothed, Princess Rina. Every time I see her smiling next to him, holding his arm like she owns him, it feels like a fresh blade twisting
deep into my old wound. He looks like a stranger now.
Today is the day Krypton Academy officially resumes, and the summer break is over. I stand at the entrance gates of the academy,
clutching the leather straps of my bag tightly against my chest. My heart beats violently against my ribs like a trapped bird trying to
break free.
I look at the familiar tall buildings that have now been repaired and upgraded, the large crowds of students laughing and talking as they
walk across the courtyard, completely oblivious to the war ruining my chest.
I take a deep, shaky breath, trying to prepare myself for the nightmare ahead. As I take my first steps onto the academy grounds, a
suffocating dread settles deep in my stomach. I look around the busy courtyard, scanning the faces in the crowd, and a terrifying thought
echoes in my mind.
How am I going to survive this semester? How am I going to survive seeing Prince Kai every single day, knowing he belongs to another
woman?

“Welcome back, everyone,” Professor Vance’s voice echoes through the classroom. He stands behind his podium, adjusting his glasses as he looks at the crowd of students. “It is pleasant to see your faces after several long months of absence. As you all know, the severe
damage inflicted upon the academy buildings during the attack required extensive structural repairs. But we are finally back, and we are
ready to resume our normal schedule.”
The hall is filled with students of level one. I sit near the middle row, staring down at the polished desk surface.
“We will begin today by reviewing the updated timetables for your advanced classes and combat training rotations,” Professor Vance
continues, tapping a finger on his podium. “This semester will be demanding. We have lost valuable time, and the curriculum will move
fast to ensure every student meets their standard benchmarks before the final evaluation exams for you to move to level two.”
A sigh escapes me as I tap the screen of my tablet to open a blank notepad. But as the device boots up, my main photo gallery pops
up, splashing an old image on the screen.
It is a selfie. I’m laughing, and my arm is draped tightly over Erika’s shoulders.
A sad feeling engulfs my chest, making it hard to swallow. Erika. My chest aches as I stare at her bright, smiling face in the picture. She
was dropped from the Academy just a couple of days before the attack because she failed her wolf assessment test even after she tried her
best. Even though she hurt me, I still wished she didn’t lose her admission.
I stare at the photo for a long moment, tracing the edge of the screen with my thumb. Wherever she is right now, I truly hope she is
doing fine. I miss her presence more than I care to admit.
“Lyra, look at this schedule,” a loud whisper cuts through my thoughts.
I quickly swipe the photo away, blinking back the sting in my eyes. I turn my head to the right. Thankfully, I am not completely isolated. My best friends, Amara and Isolde, are sitting right next to me. Both of them look incredibly excited to be back in a classroom setting, their faces glowing with a vibrant energy I haven’t felt in months.
Amara has her hair pulled up into a high, bouncing ponytail, her bright hazel eyes scanning her own tablet with a wide grin. Isolde sits perfectly straight beside her, looking neat and polished in her classy outfit, her light blue eyes crinkling as she smiles over at me.
Earlier this morning, the moment we crossed paths near the main courtyard, the two of them had hugged me so tight I could barely breathe, squeezing my ribs as if we hadn’t been seeing each other at least once a week for the past four months.
Ever since Kai walked out and left me heartbroken on the floor, I haven’t set foot back in my old life. I stayed hidden away at the safe house. For those four long months, I lived there in total isolation, surrounded only by the forest. Kara stayed with me the entire time, keeping me grounded, and Roman would visit or stay over as well, doing everything he could to distract me from the gaping void in my
heart.
