“Yeah, about that… see, I got up to the floor and realized I don’t actually know which books are yours and which ones belong to the

apartment archives,” Damon explains, his tone entirely too innocent. “And since Kai won’t be around for at least the next two hours

because he’s stuck in an emergency council meeting with the board of trustees across campus, I figured it would just be way better if you

went upstairs and grabbed your stuff by yourself. That way, nothing important gets missed.”

1 take a step back, shaking my head quickly as a knot of anxiety tightens in my stomach. “No, Damon, I really shouldn’t go up there. It

feels wrong. Can’t you just unlock the door, let me describe the books over the phone, and you grab them?”

Damon scoffs, waving his hand in the air to dismiss my concerns as he pulls a silver keycard from his pocket and presses it into my palm.

“Don’t be silly, Lyra. It’s just an empty apartment right now. You’re going to miss your class if you keep arguing. Just run up, pack your

bag, and come right back down. It’ll take you five minutes tops and I’ll be waiting here.”

I look down at the silver card in my hand, my chest tight. He’s right about the time. The clock is ticking, and I don’t have the luxury of

playing safe. I can’t lose those marks.

“Fine,” I mutter, letting out a sharp breath. “Five minutes. I’ll be right back.”

“Take your time!” Damon calls out cheerfully, giving me a small wave as I turn and hurry through the glass double doors of the lobby.

I swipe the keycard against the private elevator scanner, my heart thumping a steady, nervous rhythm against my ribs as the lift shoots up

to the top floor. When the doors slide open, the quiet, carpeted hallway of the penthouse suite stretches out before me.

I step out, holding my breath completely as I approach the front door. I press the silver card against the electronic lock. It clicks open

with a soft beep.

I cautiously push the door open and step inside, my eyes instantly darting around the grand living room. Everywhere is completely silent.

The expensive leather furniture, the dark wooden floors, and the large glass windows overlooking the academy grounds are exactly as I

remember them. It doesn’t look even a bit do.

The scent of mint and cedar still lingers faintly in the air, making a distant feeling of nostalgia hit my chest.

After I look around silently, I sigh in relief. Nobody is here. It’s completely empty.

I quickly move down the familiar hallway, my bare sneakers making no sound on the polished floorboards. I head straight to the door of

my old bedroom, reaching out to twist the handle. Thankfully, the door is unlocked.

1 push it open and step inside. I stop in my tracks, a small gasp escaping my lips.

Everything is exactly as it was on the day I left. The bed is neatly made, the heavy curtains are pulled back to let the afternoon light stream in, and my box of fighting gear and textbooks sits undisturbed near the desk. The room remains entirely untouched, as if someone

had explicitly forbidden the cleaning staff from altering a single detail.

:))

The memories of Kai backing me up in this room hits me, but I violently shake my head to clear the thoughts away. I don’t have time for

this.

I rush over to the desk, pulling a duffel bag out from the bottom drawer. Moving as fast as my hands can carry me, I begin packing up my history textbooks, my extra notebooks, and a few sets of my leather combat wear. I stuff them tightly into the canvas bag, pulling the

zipper shut with a sharp, loud snap.

I lift the heavy duffel bag, slinging the thick strap over my right shoulder. I take one final glance around the quiet room, swallow the

lump in my throat, and turn around to leave.

I walk out of the bedroom, stepping back into the hallway that connects our spaces.

But the very moment I take one step forward, a sharp click echoes through the quiet air.

At the beginning of the hallway, the door to the master suite suddenly swings open.

My entire body instantly freezes. My breath hitches completely in my throat, and my heart stops dead in my chest as my eyes fly toward

the sound.

Kai walks out of the room. Naked.
