Chapter 224

Lyra’s POV

I follow Nick as he leads me down a dark, narrow hallway that looks completely abandoned. The walls are covered in layers of thick dust, and the air smells like damp earth and old paper. Nobody seems to pass by this wing of the academy at all. In fact, the loud, overlapping sounds of the regular student corridors fade away as we move forward until there is nothing left but the echo of our own footsteps.

I look around in total silence, a cold knot of curiosity tightening in my chest. Where does this place even lead to? And more importantly, how does a quiet guy who hangs out in the library know about a hidden passage that doesn’t even exist on the campus maps?

I keep my eyes fixed on him as he walks a few paces ahead of me. I stare at his bright silver hair, which seems to catch the faint glints of

light filtering through the high air vents. He has a tall, lean form, but beneath his simple jacket, I can clearly see the hard, defined

outline of his muscular shoulders and back. He moves with a strange, effortless coordination that doesn’t match the quiet library assistant

persona he puts on.

‘He’s so handsome, right?’ Wyndra’s voice suddenly pipes up in my mind, her tone full of mischief.

I blink, completely caught off guard by her random comment.

‘Are you seriously crushing on someone else again, Wyn?’ I ask her internally, rolling my eyes hard as I walk. ‘First you throw tantrums about

Kai, and now you’re checking out the library guy?’

Wyndra giggles softly. ‘No, I am definitely not crushing on him, Lyra. But that doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate pure goodness when I see it.

Look at him. He’s nice to look at.’

I tune her out, shaking my head slightly. Wyndra is anything but a serious fox. As I continue to follow Nick deeper into the dark corridor,

a nagging, persistent question starts to swell in the back of my mind. It makes me more and more curious until it becomes completely

unbearable. I’m trusting a guy I barely know right after getting my heart completely shattered by someone I know. Before I can stop myself, the words just blurt right out of my mouth.

“What kind of shifter are you, Nick?”

Nick immediately stops walking.

The suddenness of his halt makes me freeze. He stands still in the middle of the dark hallway, his back completely stiff and unyielding.

The silence stretches between us for a long, heavy moment. He doesn’t answer right away. Slowly, he turns his body around to face me.

I instinctively take a small step back, my heart skipping an uneasy beat. The look in his gaze is weirdly intense. His deep blue eyes are

burning with an emotion I can’t quite define, and it makes my skin prickle with a sudden wave of goosebumps. I don’t understand why,

but as I stare up at his sharp features, a weird sense of familiarity fills up my mind. Why does it feel like I’ve known him for a long time

even though we only met a few months ago.

“Why are you asking me that, Lyra?” he asks, his voice low and incredibly calm.

My fingernails dig into my palm as frustration bubbles up in my chest, making my nervousness disappear. I cross my arms tightly over my heavy backpack.

“Really? Why am I asking? Well because I just chose to follow you into a dark, creepy basement hallway even though I barely know anything about you! I think I deserve to know who you really are. Where are you even from, Nick? Why are you suddenly trying to help

me out of nowhere? What are your actual intentions here?”

The words rush out of me in a desperate, frantic torrent. I am tired of secrets. I am tired of being manipulated by people who have more

power than me.

“You know what. I think this was a mistake. I should-”

Before I can even finish my sentence, Nick moves. He crosses the short distance between us with a lightning speed that makes my eyes

widen. In a split second, he is directly in my personal space, towering over me. He lifts his hand and places his index finger right against

my lips, shutting me up instantly.

I freeze in absolute shock, my breath cutting in my throat. My back hits the cold wall behind me, and I find myself staring straight up

into his very blue eyes. They are so close. Up close, the color is vibrant, reflecting the exact same shade of blue I see every single morning
