Lyra’s POV

I slowly open my eyes.

Everything around me is a complete blur of white and grey shapes. My head feels so heavy, as if a huge trailer just ran directly over my skull. I try to take a deep breath to calm the rising panic in my chest, but my throat is completely dry and parched. It feels like sandpaper every time I swallow.

I blink several times, waiting for my vision to finally clear up. When the blurry shapes finally snap into focus, I realize I am lying in a hospital room. The scent of antiseptic and clean sheets fills the air. I look down at my hands, then around the sterile space. What am I doing here? What exactly happened to me? I

try to reach back into my mind for answers, but there is only a blank hole.

Just then, the door to the room flies open.

A guy rushes inside and runs straight towards my bed.

Before I can even utter a single word or ask a question, the strange guy throws his arms around me. He pulls me into his chest, hugging me so tight that the breath leaves my lungs. He holds onto me with a terrifying desperation, as if we are either siblings who have been separated for years or passionate lovers.

My entire body instantly goes stiff in his embrace. I sit there like a statue, completely paralyzed by his

sudden touch.

The strange guy finally pulls back slightly, though his hands stay on my arms. He looks directly into my eyes, his eyes filled with both worry and relief. The first thing I notice about him is his eyes. They are a striking, intense green, exactly like a wild forest. He slowly raises one of his hands and gently brushes his

thumb across my cheek.

The simple touch sends a strange, electric jolt straight through my skin, making my head spin. I feel

completely light-headed.

“Hey, are you okay, flower?” he says, his voice dropping into a soft, breathless whisper.

I stare at him speechlessly. Why is he calling me flower when my name is Lyra? And why does the mere

sound of his deep voice make my skin feel kind of… weird? It is a bizarre, tingling sensation that I can’t

explain. Who is this guy?

My head starts to hurt even worse. A sharp pain blooms behind my eyes. I feel like I am stuck inside a

terribly confusing, bad dream.

Then, someone else steps forward from the back of the room. “Lyra… are you alright? Do you feel faint?

Should we call the doctor to come check on you?”

I look up past the green-eyed guy’s shoulder to look at who’s talking. The moment I see her, I instantly feel relieved. I recognize the girl. It is Princess Kara. The Lycan princess. I know her.

I shift my gaze around the rest of the room, and more familiar faces begin to appear. I see my friends, Amara and Isolde, standing close together with worried expressions. I see the others standing near the walls. They are all familiar to me. As I look at them, I can faintly remember some of the moments we shared

together at the academy.

I look toward the corner and recognize Roman, the Lycan Prince. Beside him stands Damon. I know his name is Damon, although my brain feels fuzzy when I try to remember exactly how I know him or who he is to me. Then my eyes land on Nick, my brother. Seeing him brings a sense of safety to my chest.

They are all here. They all belong in my life.

But… who on earth is this guy sitting on the edge of my bed?

Kara turns toward the door, ready to go and get the medical staff.

“No, no, no. I’m fine…” I quickly answer, my voice sounding rough and cracked. “I’m fine. But…” I pause, and point to the green-eyed boy. “…who is he?”

The moment the question comes out of my mouth, the entire atmosphere in the hospital room shifts. Every single person in the room freezes. Nobody moves. Nobody breathes.
