Chapter 259
“There are rewards for excellence,” he announces. “The first 20 groups to successfully finish the trial with all five artifacts will be awarded the best results. You will also be gifted special rewards for your outstanding
performance.”
Someone from the crowd shouts out, “What kind of privileges, Professor?”
Professor Belmont glares at the person that asked the question before turning to everyone with a fake
smile.
“You will have to wait until you are completely done with the test to find out. But I assure you, they are privileges that no other level one students will ever have access to.”
His smile quickly fades, replaced by a grim look. “As for the last 20 groups to finish… well, you better get ready for immediate probation. You will also instantly lose whatever previous privileges you have earned at
this academy.”
My heart begins to pound restlessly against my ribs, as pure panic grips my body.
What if my team fails? What if we end up in the bottom twenty? If I lose my privileges, does that mean I will have to move out of the amazing duplex apartment with Amara and Isolde? Or worse, what if a failure causes me to be dropped out of the academy completely?
And how on earth will I do this without Wyndra’s guidance? Professor Belmont specifically said we have to fight the rogue wolves in our wolf form. How will I pass this test without shifting? I can’t even feel my fox
right now.
“To ensure absolute fairness,” Professor Belmont’s voice cuts through my spiraling thoughts, “your teams will be selected completely at random. Every student should march forward in an orderly line and pick a card from the electronic table. The moment you touch it, the card will automatically pair you with four
other wolves.”
Oh, shit.
My stomach completely drops. I realize with a sickening dread that I can’t even pick a specific team. I can’t guarantee that I’ll be paired with Amara or Isolde. I am completely at the mercy of random luck. I close my

eyes for a brief second, praying to the Goddess that my team will at least be competent.

As the line begins to move, I manage to catch Amara’s gaze from a few feet ahead. She turns and gives me a reassuring smile. She raises her hand to show me a thumbs-up. I quickly force a small smile on my face and
do the exact same thing back to her.
A moment later, I find Isolde looking back at me too. She catches my eye and raises her fingers, showing me a love sign that instantly calms my nerves. I nod at her gratefully. I love them both so much. Whichever groups we end up falling into, I hope with everything I have that all three of us manage to come out as part
of the first twenty.
The crowd of students begins to step forward one by one, drawing their assignments from the wide electronic table at the front. When it is finally my turn, I walk up to the edge of the table. My breath cuts as I reach out my hand and pick up a blank, white plastic card.
The exact moment my fingertips brush against the surface, the card suddenly blinks. A bright blue light flashes across the plastic, and a bold number materializes in the center of the card.
It reads: Box 55
So, this means my group is number fifty-five. Just how many groups are there?
I take a deep breath, clutching the card tightly in my hand, and begin walking across the crowded hall toward the numbered grid sections. I scan the rows of transparent boxes until my eyes finally land on the
sign for box fifty-five.
The moment I approach the space, I notice there is already someone waiting inside. A boy is standing near the very back, staying right at the extreme edge of the small box as if he desperately wants to disappear
into the glass wall.
He looks slim and tall, wearing a standard academy uniform that seems a little too big for his frame. The most striking thing about him is his eyes. They are a dull grey color, and they look almost completely lifeless, devoid of any confidence. The moment I step into the box, he quickly drops his gaze to the floor, completely avoiding looking at me like he is incredibly shy.
I clear my throat gently, trying to sound friendly. “Hi, you’re also in group 55, right?” I ask the boy.
