Chapter 263
20
I force myself to stand up on my one good leg, leaning heavily against the trees for support. Gritting my teeth against the throbbing in my leg, I try to run even with my injury, limping all the way as I try to keep
up with my team. I will not be the reason we fail. Never.
After a few minutes of running, we suddenly come to a stop. The first major obstacle sits directly in front of
It is a pit of quicksand. The mud stretches out as far as the eye can see, completely blocking the path forward. The only way across is a tiny, incredibly narrow dirt road that cuts directly through the exact middle of the quicksand pit. One wrong step will send you plunging into the mud.
We all stop right in front of the quicksand, looking around for a way through. Suddenly, Aloe points toward the middle of the pit. “Guys, look!”
Right there, in the center of the mud, is one of our required artifacts. The item is wrapped tightly in a piece of brown paper, and there is a tag attached to it that clearly says Number 1.
But there is a glaring problem. The artifact is buried in a way that makes it impossible to reach from the safety of the path. To get it, someone has to physically enter the quicksand.
“Oh no, someone has to enter as fast as possible.” Sansa says sadly.
Clara crosses her arms, turning her head to glare at the shy boy. “You,” she barks in a cold voice. “The shy boy. You should enter the sand right now and go take it for us. Be useful.”
The boy freezes, his eyes widening in shock. He looks at the quicksand, then back at Clara, his lower lip trembling. “What… what if I’m unable to reach it? And what if I sink? What if there’s nothing there to catch
me?”
Clara lets out a mocking laugh, rolling her eyes. “Then you die. Simple as that. Better you than any of us. Go
on, get moving.”
“No,’ I cut in fiercely, limping forward to stand protectively in front of the terrified boy. I glare at Clara with total disgust. “No one is entering the quicksand, Clara. Stop trying to get people killed.”

Chapter 263
I turn my back on her and look over at Aloe. “We need to extract the artifact without anyone actually
entering the sand. If we work together, we can reach it.”
Aloe looks at the distance, then nods her head. “Alright. I’ll hold your waist firmly while you bend over the
edge and take it. Don’t slip.”
“We can do this,” I say, nodding back. We step forward and get close to where the artifact is buried.
Aloe plants her boots firmly on the ground of the narrow road. She wraps her arms tightly around my waist, bracing her weight. I take a deep breath, ignoring the sharp pain in my broken leg, and slowly lean my entire upper body completely over the dangerous, bubbling quicksand. I stretch my arms out as far as they can possibly go, my fingers straining toward the package.
With a final push, my fingers close around the paper wrapping. I pull back with all my might, and I successfully pick up the artifact.
As I’m pulling myself back up with Aloe’s help, my eyes catch a glint of something else, buried in the mud, right under the spot where the first package was sitting. I look closer and my breath cuts in my throat as I realize that It’s another package wrapped in brown paper, and there is a bright red Number 2 tag attached
to it.
“There’s two!” I yell out to the rest of the group excitedly, hitting my chest. “We’re lucky! There are two artifacts right here in the same spot!”
