Amara frowns immediately. “Uh… no, we have a girl’s night planned and-”

“Take her,” Isolde laughs, dragging a reluctant Amara away. “We’ll get the snacks ready Ly!”

Roman turns his attention back to me, “Congratulations. I heard you guys were in the top 20. How are you

feeling?”

I smile, though the pain in my leg is starting to make me feel a bit woozy. “I’m fine. Just… tired. And my le hurts. I took a pretty bad fall trying to protect someone.”

Roman’s eyes darken. Before I can even react, he scoops me up into his arms in bridal style.

“Roman!” I gasp, clutching his shoulders. “Put me down! People are watching!”

“Let them watch,” he says, ignoring my protests as he starts walking toward the parking area. “You’re injured, and you’re walking on it. That’s stupid. I’m taking you to my apartment. I have a first-aid kit, and you need to rest.”

1 grumble against his chest. “This wouldn’t be needed if I could just easily heal myself like I healed others.”

Roman stops dead in his tracks.

He freezes so abruptly that I almost slide out of his arms. He’s suddenly stiff as a board. He looks down at me with wide eyes and an unreadable expression.

“What did you just say?” he asks. His voice is barely a whisper, but it sounds sharp, like a blade.

I look at him, confused. Why is he suddenly so tense?

“What? I said I wish I could heal myself. I actually healed one of my team members during the test because she got badly injured trying to protect me. Isn’t that amazing? I really didn’t think I could do it, you know? Fortunately, I remembered how I once did it and just channeled that same strength and-”

“Who did you once do it for?” Roman cuts me off. His voice is tight. Too tight.

“What?”

“You just said you remember doing it once,” he says, staring at me intently. “Who did you do it for?”

I pause, trying to recall the image that had flashed in my mind when I was healing Clara. “Oh, I think… I think I once healed Prince Kai. I don’t know how I remember, but those images flashed in my mind unexpectedly. So I’m pretty sure I must have… somehow healed him before.”

Roman’s face turns red. He looks really angry now. His jaw is clenched, his knuckles white where he’s

holding me.

I nod slowly, confused but trusting him. “Okay. I won’t.”

Just as I finish speaking, I spot Princess Kara walking around the corner. She looks like she was heading toward the hall, but she stops when she sees us. She glares at Roman, her gaze traveling from his face to the way he’s holding me.

“Roman,” she says, her voice cold. “Where do you think you’re taking her?”

“She’s injured, Kara,” Roman says in a clipped tone. “I’m taking her to my place to treat her wound.”

Kara laughs, unimpressed. “Un-uh. No can do. Lyra will come with me instead. My place is better than yours, and I have the best apartment on this campus. I’ll treat her, and then she can rest.”

“It’s okay, Roman,” I say, patting his arm. “I’ll go with Kara.”

Roman hesitates, then sighs and sets me down on my good leg. Before I can even find my balance, Kara sweeps me up into her arms, holding me as effortlessly as if I weighed nothing.
