The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance) novel Chapter 273

Chapter 273

Kai

I keep my eyes locked on King Geo, refusing to look anywhere else. The throne room is stifling today. The air is heavy, smelling of stale incense and something metallic, like old copper. Around the round table, several leaders of different species are seated, their expressions looking uncomfortable. They are waiting for something. Waiting for my father to speak.

I shouldn’t be here. Honestly, I would be anywhere else but here. Recently, I’ve made it my life’s mission to avoid Lyra, to treat her like a plague because the thought of her forgetting me eats me alive. Every time I see a photo of her online, looking mushy with Roman, I feel like my skin is catching fire. It’s better to be away from the academy, away from them.

So when my father summoned me, saying there was “something important,” I didn’t think twice and just came straight to the palace. I should have known better.

Sitting directly across from me are the twin leaders of the Monpire clan, Sin and Sloth. The demon-vampire hybrids. They sit there with their pale, unnatural skin and sharp, predatory eyes, thinking they are better than regular demons. They aren’t. Demons eat people. These ones feed on both blood and people. They are no different from rogue demons. That’s why it makes me so furious that my father asked me to come over

for this bullshit.

When my father spoke about collaborating with them months ago, I thought he wouldn’t go through with it. I thought he was just testing boundaries. But seeing them here, sitting at my father’s right hand, I realize he was dead serious.

“Welcome, everyone,” my father says. His voice is smooth. He doesn’t look at me. He just looks at the center of the table. “We are about to witness the first change of Lycan and Monpire hybrids. Bring in the slaves.”

The heavy doors creak open. Fours guards walk in, dragging two young women between them.

My heart stops. They look like they haven’t eaten in weeks. They are frail with bones poking through thin, ragged clothes. They look to be about Lyra’s age or slightly older. My stomach turns as I watch them stagger

forward.

“These are some of our slaves,” Geo announces, gesturing to the girls as if they are livestock. “They are

werewolves, but they are weak. They are the perfect test subjects for this experiment.”

The room is silent. The Monpire twins share a look.

“So that’s why they deserve to be slaves?” I ask. My voice comes out low, barely a growl. I can’t help it. My fists are clenched so tight my knuckles are white.

The room goes dead silent. The shuffling of papers stops. Everyone freezes. Sin, one of the twin monpire, looks at me with amusement. My father slowly turns his head, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

“Yes, Prince Kai, King Geo says. He smiles at me, and it’s a cruel, taunting expression. “After all, your slave only became your slave because she was wolfless and a thief, did she not?”

He’s throwing Lyra in my face. He knows exactly what buttons to push. I feel my entire body tense up, my muscles coiled like a spring. I want to launch myself across the table and punch his face in, but I stay still. I have to stay still. Anything as long as he leaves Lyra the fuck alone. She may not be mine anymore, but it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t sacrifice absolutely anything for her safety.

“The experiment will begin,” my father commands.

A man dressed in heavy, dark robes like a sage, steps forward. He carries a small, silver tray with a syringe. He walks over to one of the Monpires. The monpire stretches his arm out and I can see the streaks of blue veins all over his bluish skin. It’s not as much as a regular demon’s but it’s still there. The sage extracts a vial of dark blood from the monpire into the syringe.
