The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance)

Chapter 278

Kai clears his throat roughly, his eyes instantly darting away toward the window as he looks extremely uncomfortable with my question. He shifts his weight uneasily, jaw clenching so tightly that the muscles in his neck stand out.

He looks back down at me, taking a deep breath before he finally speaks. “I… I tried to protect you by being mean to you,” he admits, his voice dropping to a low, painful register that makes my chest ache for reasons I don’t understand. “I thought if I kept you at arm’s length, if I didn’t treat you like you’re my m…”

Kai abruptly pauses, the words die in his throat as he stares at me as if he doesn’t know what else to say.

“Your what?” I ask him. “What were you going to say?”

Kai shakes his head quickly, running a rough hand over his face to compose himself. “It doesn’t matter,” he says firmly but laced with that same deep sorrow. “It doesn’t matter anymore, Lyra. But I regret it. I regret all of it. Every single second I spent pushing you away in the past, I regret it with everything I have. I know you probably don’t feel anything for me now. You definitely even hate me because of the horrible first experience you had with me when you woke up from your coma. I know I completely deserve …that hate from you. I deserve everything bad that happens to me.”

He steps even closer to the edge of the sofa, looming over me as he looks down with desperation.

“…but please,” he pleads, his voice cracking slightly, “Just allow me to protect you now. I don’t care if you hate my guts. I don’t care if you never remember my name or anything we did. I don’t care if you want my cousin with you at all times, Just let me keep you safe from the dangers of this place. I don’t know what I’d do if you come to any single harm, Lyra. I wouldn’t survive it. Please, Lyra. Just let me do that for you.”

He slowly raises his right hand toward my face. His fingers tremble slightly as his fingers hover close to my cheek. He is close enough that I can feel the pulsing heat of his skin washing over my face. He looks down at me with so much longing, as if he desperately wants to touch my skin, but he forces himself to hold back out of respect. I stop breathing entirely, and my chest freezes beneath the blanket as I stare up at his hand.

I’m completely terrified of whatever this powerful bond is, but oddly, a spark of excitement shoots straight through my veins at his closeness. My heart races violently in my ribs.

We stay completely frozen like that for a long moment, neither of us moving a single inch or looking away.

After a while, Kai lets out a defeated sigh and slowly drops his hand back down to his side. The magical spell between us breaks instantly. He looks away from me in shame, his posture slumping as he turns his back to me and prepares to walk out of the living room, leaving me all alone.

I look at his retreating form, and a sudden realization hits me in the chest. Even though I don’t like him, even though I should be happy that he’s finally leaving me alone, I realize that I don’t want him to leave me right now. I really do not want to be left alone in this empty apartment with nothing but my own racing thoughts and my throbbing leg.

Should I just tell him that I’m having these weird flashbacks of him randomly? How will he react? Or should i just keep it to myself

and hope it never happens again?

And why do I not want him to leave so badly?

“Wait!” I say, before I can stop myself.
