“Wait!”
I freeze immediately. The soft sound of Lyra’s voice hits me, stopping my feet right before I can take another step toward the door.
My heart takes a violent leap inside my chest. Why is she stopping me? Is it actually possible that she doesn’t want me to leave her
alone right now?
An overwhelming wave of hope fills my chest as I slowly turn around to look back at her. She is sitting up on the sofa, clutching the blanket tightly against her body. I stand completely still, waiting for her to speak. The silence stretches between us, heavy and thick. When she doesn’t say anything else, just keeping her wide blue eyes locked on mine. I fsice my voice to remain completely gentle.
“Dp you need anything, Lyra?” I ask softly.
She swallows hard, her fingers tightening on the fabric of the cover cloth. She looks down at her lap for a brief second before looking back up at me. “If you don’t mind staying… I’d like that.”
A jolt of shock slams my entire body. I can barely believe my own ears. She wants me to… stay?
A small, uncontrollable smile tugs at the corner of my lips. Deep inside my mind, Vlad, suddenly wakes up and begins to pace with intense excitement. The fucker only gets active when Lyra is active.
“Maybe we have hope,’ Vlad purrs in my head, his voice rough with excitement. Maybe we have a real chance of getting our mate back, Kai. Even if she doesn’t have her memories right now, she still wants us close. Push her. Make her remember.’
‘No.’ I argue back in my mind, shutting Vlad down immediately. I’m not going to do that again. I will not try to force her to remember a single thing until she is completely ready. I almost destroyed her spirit in the hospital. I’m going to give her time.”
Vlad growls in frustration, clawing at the back of my mind, but I ignore him. I focus entirely on the girl sitting in front of me.
I walk back over to the sofa, moving slowly so I don’t startle her. I bend down, dropping to one knee so I am directly at eye-level with Lyra. I keep my hands to myself, resting them on my knee, refusing to crowd her space.
“Are you okay?” I ask her, my voice low. “Do you want me to get you something else? More water? Another blanket? Want me to

Lyra shakes her head gently, her shiny silver hair brushing against her shoulders. “No, I’m fine. I don’t need anything.” She pauses, her lower lip trembling slightly. She looks at me with a strange intensity. “I want to ask you something, Prince Kai.”
“Anything,” I answer instantly, meaning every single word. “Ask me anything you want, Lyra. I’ll tell you the truth.”
Lyra stays quiet for a long moment. She seems to be gathering her courage, and it makes me wonder what it is that is bothering her.
