Chapter 30

Lyra

Are you okay, Ly?Erika asks as soon as we walk toward an empty table.

I’m fine,I tell her, letting out a breath I feel like I’ve been holding for years. I’m just glad it’s over.

We’re both carrying new trays of food since Daisy scattered our first ones all over the floor. After Prince Kar and Kara left, Daisy and her friends bolted out of the hall in shame and tears. The vibe in the cafeteria has shifted. People aren’t looking at me with those judgmental, thiefglares anymore. Now, it’s

more of a curious stare. They’re trying to figure out why the Prince just defended me.

When we reach a free table, I set my tray down. Erika frowns, looking past my shoulder. Why are these guys staring at you like weirdos?

I look up to see who she’s talking about and I freeze. Standing a few yards away are my brother, Jackson, and my exboyfriend, Ryan.

Jackson is staring at me in total shock with his mouth slightly open. But it’s Ryan who makes my skin crawl. He’s leaning against a pillar, smiling weirdly at

me, like he knows a secret or like he’s actually happy to see me. It’s a slimy look that makes me feel sick to my stomach.

I still remember the exact moment he told me he belonged with Daisy. He looked me in the eye and said I wasn’t fit to be a future mate for someone like

him. Just thinking about it makes my blood run hot with anger.

I wish I’d never let him get close to me. Ryan was my first everything. He was the first boy I ever liked, the first person who talked to me like I actually

mattered, and the first boy I gave myself to. And how did he repay me? By humiliating me in the worst way possible and then blaming the whole rejection

on me and my uncle. I glare back at him hard before turning away to face my food.

Is something wrong?Erika asks, her fork halfway to her mouth. Do you know them?

They’re from my pack,I say shortly. But they don’t matter to me.

Thankfully, Erika doesn’t push it. She just digs into her food, humming happily. Oh man, this pasta is so spicy and delicious!

I manage a small smile. She’s so sweet and cheerful, a total difference to the sadness I feel. I take a bite of my sandwich, hoping for a moment of peace.

But peace doesn’t last long at Krypton. Two girls suddenly walk up to our table and stand directly in front of us, blocking our sight.

Erika and I look up at the girls. One of them has red hair and round glasses, while the other has blonde hair, a lot like Daisy’s. They’re both wearing cute, stylish outfits that make them look more like innocent humans than she wolves.

I let out a tired sigh. Please, we really don’t want any trouble. We’re just trying to eat.

The two girls look at each other and burst out laughing.

Why would we want trouble with someone who isn’t afraid of bullies?the redhead asks, her eyes twinkling behind her glasses. I’m Amara and my friend

Isolde. We think you guys are actually pretty cool. Mind if we join you?

The blonde girl clasps her hands together. Pleaseeee? Everywhere else is full and you guys seem like you need more company.

I turn to Erika, unsure of what I should say since I hardly deal with girls my age.
