He stops by the side of the large bed his green eyes never leaving my face for a single second. “Bexides… I’m not gonna touch you. Not unless you want me to.” He says, grinning down at me and looking so incredibly handsome in the dim light that my chest actually hurts for a second.

I stare at him, completely caught off guard by the beautiful smile on his face. ! expected to feel a sense of relief where he promised he wouldn’t touch me That’s exactly what a normal, sensible girl in my position is supposed to feel. So why the hell do I feel an annoying sting of disappointment instead?! mentally scold myself, telling my brain to stop being completely ridiculous. I’m just exhausted.

After a few minutes, I’m safely tucked into the large, comfortable bed, with Kai gently placing the thick, warm ilanket over my body and smoothing it out around my shoulders. The sheets are perfectly clean, and the mattress feels amazing against my aching body. I feel so comfortable right now, safer than have felt in days.

I look up at him as he stands next to the edge of the bed, his tall frame blocking out the faint right coming from the hallway. “Thank you,” I tell him quietly, pulling the blanket up a bit higher.

Kai pauses, hands freezing on the edge of the fabric. He looks down at me, blinking in surprise. “For what?”

“For taking care of me,” I say, looking right into his eyes. “For being there for me tonight when everything went wrong, and for making me feel… safe. I really appreciate it, Kai.”

Kai gives me a small, genuine smile that completely softens his usually harsh features. He leans forward a bit and uses his fingers to gently push a stray strand of my hair behind my ear. His fingers brush against my skin, and the silent moment between us feels so special right now. It feels like the rest of the world has completely disappeared, and it’s just the two of us in this quiet bedroom.

Kai keeps his hand near my face for a second longer, his eyes studying my expression. “Are you really okay, Lyra? Do you need anything else before I leave you to sleep? Do you want some water? A snack? Anything at all?”

I shake my head against the pillow, giving him a small smile. “No, I’m fine. I don’t need anything.”

Kai narrows his eyes slightly, looking at me closely. He clearly doesn’t believe me. “I feel like something is still bothering you, though. Your eyes are wandering all over the room, and you look like you’re thinking too hard. What is it? You can tell me.”

I let out a sigh, realizing I can’t really hide anything from him when he’s looking at me with that much intensity. “I heard a voice,” I admit, keeping m voice very low. “Not too long ago. Right before you picked me up in the hallway.”

Kai’s expression instantly turns serious. The playful look vanishes, and he leans ip closer to the bed, resting his hands on his either side of me. “What voice, Lyra? Wyndra?”

“Not wyndra. Just a voice in my head,” I explain, trying to find the right words to make it make sense. “It felt a bit like Wyndra, but it wasn’t quite Wyndra. It was completely different from her.”

Kai frowns a bit, his eyes searching mine as he tries to understand. “Who does it sound like? What did it say?”

“I think it might be my phoenix,” I tell him, even though I’m not entirely sure. “The voice sounded incredibly powerful and almost… magical. It leit

ancient.”

Kai listens to me intently, nodding his head slowly as I speak, taking in every single word. “And what else did the voice say to you?”

i look into his deep eyes, my heart skipping a beat as I gather the courage to say the next part out loud. “The voice said that I should trust you

ereiches between us, but it doesn’t feel awkward or uncomfortable anymore. Then, smile breaks on his face. He reaches out and brushes his knuckles

gently against my cheek, his touch incredibly light and tender.

“You have no idea how glad I am that your spirit animal trusts the,” he say: his voice thick with a mixture of pure relief and deep emotion.

We just stay like that for a long moment, staring at each other and breathing in the same air. Kai’s face is so close to mine right now that I can feel the warmth of his breath hitting my lips. Every instinct inside my body is suddenly screaming at me to move closer to him.

He looks so perfect, so safe, and the magnetic pull between us is so intense that I just want to lean in and kiss him right now. I want to forget about the past, forget about the contract, and just feel his lips on mine.

But before I can gather the courage, Kai releases a breath and slowly moves back, breaking the spell between us. He clears his throat softly, looking down at the floor for a quick second before looking back at me. “You should get some rest, Lyra,” he says quietly, taking a step away from the bed.

The exact moment Kai stands up from my side and prepares to walk out of the room, panic suddenly hits me. I realize something important. I really don’t want to be alone in the dark tonight after everything that happened.

Before I can even stop myself or think about how it looks, my hand shoots out from under the heavy blanket and grabs his arm tightly, stopping him from moving away from me. “Wait,” I whisper.

Kai pauses instantly. He freezes in place and turns around, looking down at my hand gripping his bare forearm. Then he looks up at my face, his green eyes turning dark and intense, as if he’s silently wondering what I mean by stopping him.

“I… please, stay with me,” I whisper, my voice sounding a bit small as I look up at him. I can feel my face flushing a deep, embarrassed red in fire dim light, but I force the words out anyway. “Don’t leave.”

Kai looks completely surprised for a moment. His eyes widen slightly, and his jaw tightens. But the surprise quickly melts away into something soft, tender, and warm. He doesn’t say a single word as he slowly leans down over the bed. Me places one large hand on the pillow right next to my head and presses a soft, lingering kiss to my forehead.

“I’m here always, baby,” he murmurs against my skin, his deep voice sending a pleasant shiver straight down my spine. “Get some sleep while I watch you.”

I stare up at him and feel my heart finally settling into a calm, steady rhythm. A deep sense of peace washes over my mind, and I feel completely copient tonight as I let my eyes slowly close, knowing he is right here.
