Who the hell is this girl? Why does she have the same scar, the same lack of an animal, and why does she look so strange to me?
My suspicion flares. I step closer, casting a shadow over her small frame. “If you just transferred yesterday, what exactly are you doing at the royals‘ apartment block? This area is strictly off–limits to general students.”
The girl looks down shyly for a moment, her lower lip trembling. Then, she sniffles and looks up at me, tears welling in her blue eyes. “Well… your highness, my father is a high lord in the Eastern territory. Because of his status, he got me my own dorm apartment, which the administration told me is located around here. I got lost in the dark, and I didn’t mean to…” She pauses as a tear escapes and runs down her cheek. “I really didn’t mean to cause any trouble. I’m so sorry.”
Her cries suddenly get worse, her shoulders start shaking violently as she covers her mouth to muffle her sobs. She looks completely
terrified of me, breaking down right there in the middle of the hallway.
I look around the empty corridor, feeling entirely confused and guilty. Fucking hell. Did I speak too harshly to her? I’m used to
intimidating people, but she looks like she’s about to faint from terror.
“Hey, okay uh… it’s okay,” I mutter, softening my tone as I try to calm her down. “Stop crying. You’re not in trouble.”
I reach out, intending to briefly touch her arm to steady her shaking body, but the exact moment my bare fingers make contact with the
skin of her forearm, a violent shock snaps through my entire body.
I freeze, my eyes widening in horror. I just felt a spark.
The spark I just felt was….weird. My skin crawls, a strange, electric current shooting straight up my arm and into my chest. My heart stops for a dangerous second as I realize something.
You only ever feel a spark like that with your fated mate.
But the spark I just felt now feels… completely different. It doesn’t feel warm, pure, and magnetic like the pull I have with Lyra. This ene feels cold, heavy, and way too consuming. But it is still a mate spark, which makes absolutely no sense. It’s impossible. Lyra is my mate. The bond between us is undeniable, and I’ve already claimed her as mine in every way that matters except the final mark. How can I feel
a spark with this stranger?
Before I can even pull my hand away or process the absolute chaos screaming in my mind, Marine’s sobs get louder. Before I know what is happening, she takes a step forward and rushes directly into my arms.
She throws her arms around my waist, hugging me tightly, burying her face straight into my bare chest. “I’m so scared, Prince Kai,” she sobs, her voice muffled against my skin. “I’m entirely alone in this big academy, and everyone is so cruel. Please, don’t be cruel too.”
I freeze completely, my hands hovering awkwardly in the air. My mind is spinning in absolute circles, and the weird spark is still buzzing under my skin, making me uneasy. I feel a sudden rush of panic. I need to get her off me. Right now.

Chapter 312
I awkwardly put my hands on her shoulders to push her away from my body and demand some real answers.
She looks up at me, blinking rapidly as if she’s trying to force out more tears,
“I’m sorry, am I interrupting something?”
My heart drops straight into my stomach. I snap my head around, and my eyes widen in pure horror.
Standing right beside the elevator is Lyra.
She stands still with her hands clenched into tight fists at her sides. She is wearing one of my oversized t–shirts, her silver hair slightly messy from sleep. I look at her face and feel a physical ache in my chest.
She looks back and forth between me and the girl hugging my waist. Her eyes are trained on me with a mixture of shock, betrayal, and
burning anger.
